$25,000 reward offered for information leading to arrest of person responsible for shooting of letter carrier
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville Metro Police say a mail carrier was shot in the face Wednesday morning during a drive-by shooting.
It took place in the 800 block of Dearborn Avenue, near Garland, at around 10:30 this morning.
We’re told the regular mailman for the street was making his daily rounds. One witness says she had talked to him a few moments earlier, when she heard five or six gunshots. That witness — a former police officer — came outside and found that the mailman had been shot.
The woman says he was talking and alert, saying that his head was hurting and wanted to call his wife.
The witness immediately called police and used a cloth to wrap his head.
“I heard him hollering, ‘I’m shot! I’m shot!'” said Janice Lewis. “I ran down to give him aid and prayed over him, and then he told me that a guy had been riding through the streets three times, and then he came back as he was exiting his vehicle and shot him.”
Police say the mailman told them he thinks he knows who shot him.
POLICE: Mail carrier shot on Dearborn Avenue
…so happy to be a retired mail carrier… getting rough out there…
Look around your office.
You REALLY want these nut jobs to have a side arm!!??
No thanks!! I’ll take my chances on the street!!
Some neighborhoods are getting too damn dangerous for us to be in. City carriers are getting robbed, assaulted and murdered at an alarming rate. There are three options as I see it. First, have a police patrol with you in those neighborhoods and in some really nasty ‘hoods, the whole day. That probably isn’t feasible unless USPS would have postal inspector/police doing it. But that would cost money that is better used in bonuses.
Second, stop delivering to these types of places. Universal service is nice but if people let their towns and neighborhoods get that unsafe, I say the hell with street delivery and make them get P.O. boxes.
Third, arm the carriers. I’m kind of ambivalent on this one because it could invite more trouble, but perhaps people might be more reluctant to assault one of us if they think we are authorized to use deadly force if we truly believe our lives are in danger.
If I was the PMG, I would go with stopping mail service in proven bad ghettos, projects and other inner city hell holes. It’s a privilege to get free mail service to your street and door, but privileges can be revoked. I read of one tragedy where a carrier very close to retirement last year was murdered on his route. I am 11 months from my retirement and that would be a horrible thing to happen. If I sense danger, I get the hell out. But you never know.
my thoughts are with the carrier and his family.
Yes on concealed weapon.
Time for us to be allowed to carry our concealed weapon
