Letters, packages grabbed at gunpoint from South Florida letter carrier

A gunman and a getaway driver are being sought after a letter carrier was robbed of some mail he was carrying, federal officials said.

Postal officials Tuesday released information about the robbery and surveillance images of the car believed to be used during the crime.

A man wearing dark clothes, white gloves and a hoodie covering his head and part of his face “brandished a weapon at the letter carrier,” according to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

The robber was after the master keys that letter carriers use to open community mailboxes in apartments and condominiums, according to Postal Inspector Ivan Ramirez.

Such keys can gain access to a lot of mail at once — allowing valuables to be stolen as well as getting access to information that can be used to steal identities.

“Little did he know that in a route such as a residential area, our carriers don’t necessarily have keys. I guess, not to call it a complete loss, he decided to steal several trays of mail along with some packages,” Ramirez told WSVN-Ch. 7.
