Man dead after firing at mail carrier, deputy in northwest Minnesota

A northwest Minnesota man who allegedly fired a rifle at a mail carrier and a sheriff’s deputy is dead after a standoff with law enforcement late Monday morning.

The Polk County sheriff’s office was called to a home at about 11:21 a.m. when a rural mail carrier reported a rear window of his vehicle was shattered by gunfire, according to a sheriff’s office press release.

The mail carrier reported hearing two gunshots, and at least one struck his vehicle. The Polk County deputy who responded found a man with a rifle, and the deputy called for backup. The man shot at the deputy and struck his vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.

The man was later found dead outside his home, next to what the sheriff’s office described as a high-powered rifle. The home is in Northland Township, about 16 miles from East Grand Forks.
