Man hit by postal truck in Delaware dies of injuries

A man who was struck by a postal truck earlier this month near his Kent County home has died of his injuries, state police said Wednesday.

Robert R. Thomas, 79, was hit shortly before 2 p.m. Jan. 12 near his home ….

Thomas approached the truck to give the carrier some mail, but its driver – Billie Joe Bentz, 43, of Dover – didn’t see him, Master Cpl. Gary E. Fournier said.

Bentz began to pull away from the mailbox, hitting Thomas with the truck’s front bumper and knocking him to the ground, Fournier said.

Thomas, who suffered an undetermined head injury in the fall, was admitted to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital in Dover, he said.

  1. This is sad news for sure, and I’m sure the letter carrier is probably beside herself in grief and fear for what management might do to her. Readers take note: our LLV’s have terrible visibility. The blind spots are big enough to hide a freight train in. Make sure the carrier sees you, and keep your kids away from us at all times! I have a terrible time with brat kids whose parents just stand in the yard picking their noses and do nothing to keep toddlers and other kids out of the street. Those kids will try to hop on your back bumper, chase you with their bikes, and wedge themselves between you and your mailboxes.
We have kids, too, and the last thing we ever want to do is hurt or kill a child, but it’s ultimately your responsibility to watch them and be smart enough to keep them out of the damn street. We can’t see them, and it sickens me to see lazy ass customers just stand around drinking and ignoring their kids. If your child gets hit, it’s nobody’s fault but yours for being a fucking moron.
