Michigan: At least 50 letter carrier trucks formed procession to accompany late colleague’s hearse to cemetery

jorahFriends and co-workers of a Mount Clemens letter carrier who died unexpectedly at his son’s baseball tournament delivered a special salute for his passing on Saturday morning.

At least 50 letter carrier trucks formed a procession to accompany David Jorah’s hearse from Wujek-Calcattera & Sons funeral home in Sterling Heights to a trip past the U.S. Post Office in Mount Clemens and finally to the burial at Clinton Grove Cemetery in Clinton Township.

Although similar processions are made for firefighters and law enforcement officers, it’s rare to have a mail carrier honored in such a fashion. But that underscores how well respected Jorah was, according to friends and colleagues.

Jorah, 42, was attending his 17-year-old son’s baseball tournament in southern Ohio last week when he unexpectedly died. The cause of death was not known, Thomas said.

While his family was left reeling from the devastating loss, colleagues at the Mount Clemens post office wanted to show their respect for him, so they came up with the idea of a procession, Thomas said.

“He was at work on Thursday and then Friday, he was gone,” she said. “Everyone he worked with feels bad for his wife and children, and this is a small way they could show their support for the family.”

Funeral services were held Friday. More than 30 people signed his online guestbook, in addition to those who showed up at the funeral home.

  1. I loved this show of support. He must have been one heck of a fella. I to wondered how this was authorized. Then I thought their office must have one heck of a leader. This is how the USPS should roll!!

  2. Not to sound unfeeling or anything like that but what about all those customers who depend on their mail on Saturdays? Were those 50 mail trucks on lunch or in their line of travel?

  3. Very impressive! I’m sure the family appreciated the show of support the carriers demonstrated. Whether you love your job or not it’s a big part of your life. This is a great way to honor your co-worker and his grieving family.

  4. God bless you and your family, thanks to all the carriers who came out to show support.
