Letter carrier robbed while delivering mail at 7:15 p.m
YPSILANTI TWP.- Michigan – The postal worker told police he was walking back to his mail truck when he was approached by a man who then brandished a handgun.
According to police, the gunman forced the worker to the ground and took the vehicle’s keys so he could open the rear door to the mail truck. At this point, police say another male suspect came to the truck. The two suspects then removed several packages before fleeing on foot.
Police say they’re not sure exactly how many packages were stolen from the truck, nor what their contents were.

ARMED ROBBERY OF A U.S. POSTAL SERVICE LETTER CARRIER.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering a reward up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the two suspects who robbed a Letter Carrier on Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at approximately 7:15 p.m. The letter carrier was robbed at gunpoint while delivering mail in the 1100 block of Georgina, Ypsilanti, MI. One of the suspects is described as a black male, approximately in his 20’s, 6’0”, 180 pounds, wearing a blue and gold jacket, dark colored “skull” cap, and boots. The suspects fled on foot.
This type of crime affects the ability of the Postal Service to deliver your mail.
A cash reward is offered by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for this robbery.

Obie’s economy is booming. Girly men carriers can find work at McDonalds,, but few are qualified to flip burgers or pack fries.
This would not happen if the carrier were delivering mail at 2:00pm and heat stroke among carriers could be eliminated by only working carriers in the spring, fall and winter months.
Stop complaining about working when it gets dark! This will give them ammunition to use to stop saturday delivery.

UPS an FedEx are not out on foot “everyday going door to door”where the bad guys can lay in wait under the cover of dark to strike.
UPS an FedEx delivers random, you don’t know when or where they will stop, Unlike a postal carrier.
This raises the danger factor for the carrier but everybody knows this. The Postal sevice is doing what they do best, play stupid.
What the postal service is doing is putting their employees in harms way giving the bad guys the upper hand. This will go on an more, as the poor get poorer.
The postal service will keep washing their hands of it.
Maybe it’s time to start allowing carriers to carry side arms again, just like they used to when they rode the rails!

Yes it is all Postal management’s fault. The criminals who threatened the letter carrier and stole the mail are not to blame.
all you fools delivering mail in dark remember whatever happens you own it. those head lights are not postal approved. if everyone brought mail back before dark they stupid idiots up top would change starting times etc. so good luck. The last two posts are not funny at all. It’s totally childish and disrespectful of a very serious situation. “All your TSP” is right – management couldn’t care less. This may help stoke the fuel in the fire about late deliveries though, but at a cost that should be unacceptable to everybody in the USPS, not just craft.
My local management team is a lying scheming sorry sack of dogshit who care only about MSP scans and office times. Whether mail gets delivered or brought back really doesn’t matter to them. Just make somebody go back out in the dark into some nasty neighborhoods that aren’t safe in broad daylight.
We simply will not succeed by reasoning with people like this. I’m sorry to say there is almost nothing we can do maybe except file safety grievances after the fact. The way the contract is worded, you can’t do preventative grievances – you have to wait until something happens, which in the case of the moronic work hours we have now is wrong. I’m very pissed off at the NALC even though I’m an officer because they are doing next to nothing to help us. What will it take, folks?
