SPRING LAKE, MI – A former employee of the Spring Lake Post Office has been sentenced to probation, community service and restitution for stealing customers’ mail in 2010.
In the embezzlement count to which she pleaded guilty, Smith was charged with opening mail and stealing a Spring Lake library card, a $50 Wal-Mart gift card and – from test mail sent by the U.S. Postal Service – a greeting card and $10 Wal-Mart gift card.
In the second count, later dismissed, she was accused of illegally opening or keeping other gift cards, magazines, World Trade Center commemorative coins, flooring samples and five free fudge coupons, as well as $52 cash and a greeting card sent as a test by the postal service.
According to a statement by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General in October 2010, released in response to Muskegon Chronicle inquiries, the employee – not publicly named at that time – resigned after a federal investigation of reports that mail had been stolen from a rural route served by the Spring Lake Post Office.
