Michigan Postal Workers handle more than 78,000 letters, packages for 11 yr. old birthday boy

Colin was all smiles and in awe of the carts and carts packed with birthday letters and packages that were piled inside the post office in Richland, a small town between Battle Creek and Kalamazoo.

Postal workers put in extra hours to handle the more than 78,000 letters and packages that arrived for Colin since his mother, Jennifer, created the “Happy Birthday Colin” Facebook page in February. Colin, now 11, has a sensory processing disorder similar to autism, and says it has been hard for him to make friends.

Soon after the birthday page was started, Colin’s mother said people started to ask how they could mail Colin a card to help him celebrate his special day. She opened a post office box, and letters have been pouring in since then.

His Facebook page now has more than 2.1 million likes.

“We have had people calling us and thanking us for taking care of all of his mail,” said Elizabeth Bohannon, postmaster of the Richland office. “We’ve even had people bring us food.”

Today, it was the post office that had food for Colin. A birthday cake frosted to look like a letter addressed to Colin waited for him when he arrived, along with a bunch of balloons and punch.

  1. Since none of this was Standard, USPS might have broke even on the extra expense for once.
