Inspectors said they hope a reward will help identify two young assailants.
Sally Denson was in her basement when the robbers attacked the mailman on her porch Monday afternoon. She saw the aftermath when she came upstairs.
“When I looked down there there was the policeman and the mailman with his eye closed up, and he was bleeding across his face,” Denson said. “Why would you mess with the mailman? (The) only thing he do is deliver the mail and keep going.”
A fill-in is delivering mail on the route near 34th Street and Hampton Avenue as the carrier recovers.
“Two unknown suspects came down to him, threw him down off the stairs, began beating him up and asked for money, took his satchel and ran off,” Postal Inspector Brian Haraway said.
Milwaukee mail carrier attacked on route
Things will only get worse. More local govts will follow NYC’s lead and discourage stop and frisk and other robbery prevention practices. Though well intentioned, the kinder gentler treatment of potential robbers will encourage more robberies, including that of carriers. If you don’t blieve me, just wait and see.
To SuperMPE: we carry dog repellent, not actual mace. It’s a spray of condensed pepper of some sort that irritates the dog but does not permanent harm. You wouldn’t want it to be stronger because it’s always possible if that dog comes at you from upwind, as one did to me years ago, the spray can and does hit the carrier, too. Even with sunglasses on, some managed to get behind the lenses and it burned like hell, so I know from personal experience it works. The dog wasn’t very fond of it either. I hate having to do that because I genuinely love all animals, and they don’t know any better. It’s the owner who lets them run loose, turns the dog loose on you on purpose like a preacher did to me once, and otherwise ignores leash laws that I get mad at.
If an assailant came after me and I had time I’d spray that SOB in a second. One day a skank is going to pick the wrong carrier to cross. I know many who work out, have martial arts belts and would be very dangerous to screw around with. Having some piece of shit get his ass kicked and arrested by a mailman might send a message to other thieves. If not, the USPS could and should just end street delivery in the worst neighborhoods. It’s the people out there who make the routes potentially deadly and if they can’t act like adults then it’s their tough shit if somebody rightfully doesn’t want to put him or herself at an unnecessary risk.
Pray and Give them tasers, that a take care the stray, wild dogs too.
Back in the day, USPS used to issue dog mace to its carriers, are the carriers still packing the mace? If so, I would use the spray to defend myself. Just wondering.
Start them earlier!!!
Maybe Postal workers should start carring a side arm to defend themselfs. Check day can be dangerous.
