Friday, November 14, 2014

Once again, the Postal Service’s end-of-year results – which were released earlier today – demonstrate the Postal Service’s continued importance to American commerce and society.

In 2014, the Postal Service saw overall revenue growth, as well as growth in letter mail revenue and in package volume and revenue. Importantly, the Postal Service also netted an operating profit for the year of $1.4 billion. It does all this without a dime of taxpayer dollars.

This 2014 growth builds on the remarkable improvements we saw in 2013.

It also begs the question: if the Postal Service can make money delivering the mail, why do Congress and USPS management insist on tearing it down by proposing new cuts in service and refusing to address a burdensome mandate that costs it billions of dollars a year?

We don’t need to eliminate Saturday delivery. We don’t need to slow mail delivery speeds with additional processing plant closures. We don’t need to make the Postal Service less convenient by eliminating door-to-door delivery. Those sorts of changes will only drive customers away.

Instead, we need smart, targeted reforms that address the Postal Service’s most pressing financial issues and that build on the strength of its unmatched network.

That’s the kind of sensible reform Americans want to see from Congress.
