As Long Life Vehicles (LLVs) continue to age, the threat of vehicle fires and the risk to letter carriers increases. Reports of postal vehicle fires are appearing more frequently than ever before. Letter carriers need to be aware of their rights and responsibilities when operating Postal Service vehicles and the steps to take should problems arise.
NALC shop stewards, safety captains, and branch officials need to be especially vigilant and fiercely proactive to combat this escalating safety threat.

Many carriers refuse to keep a eye on the dash gauges. They continue to drive when the vehicle is overheating or no oil pressure until an engine blows or hoses burst. Engine oil and anti freeze on a hot exhaust is flammable.
iT’S amazing how all these comments are so negative. But you all have one thing in common. You won’t go and find another job!! LOL! So quit your whining because I don’t have any more cheese & crackers!!
Typical bs comment. Yes, go get another job, instead of trying to fix the many broken things in the USPS.
Bet you don’t even work at the USPS.

Don’t worry my fellow brothers and sisters, buyouts coming, hold on.
nobody cares! it’s not right i know.union doesn’t care, because they have known about this for years. they have never fought for a good wage and know management is brutal to work for. best thing i can tell you is to get out before you get injured or killed because they don’t care about you, only there bonuses. i know I’ve been there! god bless all letter-carriers because you are at there mercy. the union sucks!
So True our Union (NALC) is spineless, currupt, and out of touch organization that needs to be overhauled.
And the useless NALC will do nothing but it’s usual lip service about it. Worst executive team in history.
Why hasn’t our Union been pushing for new vehicles and holding management responsible for not providing them? They knew the age of these vehicles several years ago and what happened? Nothing. Union simply said the fleet is aging and didn’t do anything about it. They know how worthless those vehicles are especially in the winter yet nothing happens. They are so worried about any changes to the Post Office that could affect delivery days and methods of delivery, namely curbside boxes, things that would affect the number of carriers needed. Which in turn would mean less Union dues coming in. Maybe they should focus on stuff to make our job a little easier and safer. Or get us more $ on our contract since we are driving unsafe vehicles. It won’t happen. Same story, another day.
I had an llv start on fire about 20 years ago. My case was caused by the repair shop mechanic not properly securing the power steering hose to the power steering pump. I don’t see that mentioned in any of these write-ups
With these cold temperatures the only way to stay warm in one is to start it on fire
