NAPS send Letter to House Members supporting 1-year Moratorium on USPS closures

The National Association of Postal Supervisors (NAPS) sends  Letter to House of Representatives supporting One Year Moratorium

naps-logoDear Member of the House of Representatives

The United States Postal Service has announced plans to close 82 processing facilities in 37 states around the nation, effective January 2015. This is a shortsighted move that will slow down the mail nationwide, reduce or eliminate First-Class overnight mail in affected areas, and harm small businesses and other customers of the Postal Service. In addition, these closures will eliminate roughly 15,000 jobs, many held by veterans.
The National Association of Postal Supervisors believes there is a better way. We support the establishment of a one-year moratorium that suspends the closure of these processing plant closures while Congress completes action on comprehensive reform legislation to permit the Postal Service to function effectively.

Fifty Senators and a growing number of House Members have called for the inclusion of the one-year moratorium in the Continuing Resolution that Congress will consider in September.

We ask you to co-sign the attached letter, proposed by a bipartisan group of ten House Members, that will be sent to Chairman Rogers and Ranking Member Lowey of the House Appropriations Committee as well as Chairman Crenshaw and Ranking Member Serrano of the Sub-Committee on Financial Services and General Government, urging inclusion in the Continuing Resolution of a one-year moratorium on the closures of these 82 mail processing facilities, as well as mandating that the Postal Service maintain and comply with the service
standards for First-Class mail that became effective on July 1, 2012.

Please add your name to the letter by contacting Carla DiBlasio in Congressman David Joyce’s office at Carla.Diblasio@mail.house.gov.

Sincerely,
Louis M. Atkins

Support the Preservation of First-Class Mail Delivery Standards

Dear Colleague,

The United States Postal Service plans to close 82 mail processing facilities throughout 37 states in January of 2015. These closures will eliminate First Class overnight delivery in areas served by these facilities and slow down mail throughout the nation. Meanwhile, these closures are expected to eliminate up to 15,000 Postal Service jobs. These actions will inflict irrevocable harm upon the mail system, adversely affect commerce, and impair the quality of mail service that our constituents depend on.

In response, we ask you to support our efforts in obtaining a one-year moratorium on the closure of these 82 processing facilities and the preservation of First-Class mail delivery standards while Congress continues to work on comprehensive postal reform.

We aim to insert language into the FY 2015 Continuing Resolution and any potential omnibus mandating that the USPS suspend its processing facility closure plans for one year. Please support this effort by signing the attached letter to Appropriations Chairman Rogers and Ranking Member Lowey and the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Appropriations Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee. This letter has been endorsed by the American Postal Workers Union, the National Association of Letter Carriers, the National Postal Mail Handlers Union, the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, and the National Association of Postal Supervisors.

To sign the letter, please contact Carla DiBlasio with Congressman David Joyce at Carla.DiBlasio@mail.house.gov.
Sincerely,

David P. Joyce Member of Congress
Ron Kind Member of Congress
