New York postal worker accused of stealing mail

postal worker charged with stealing cash from mailA former Endicott, NY city carrier assistant (cca) has been indicted on a federal charge for allegedly stealing mail he was tasked with delivering.

Adam Keough, 21, is accused of stealing gift cards, letters and packages that were sent through the mail on his delivery route between January of 2014 through June 13, 2014 while he was working in the Endicott and Binghamton post offices, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

On Wednesday, November 12, 2014, a federal grand jury indicted Keough on a felony count of theft of mail by an officer or employee.

The investigation began May 5 when a Special Agent, (USPS Office of the Inspector General (OIG) received information from the Binghamton police that a postal customer did not receive two Mirabito gift cards as addressed . The gifts cards were used at the Mirabito convenience store in Endicott, NY. Keough was seen on surveillance video using the cards, court papers said.

Federal investigators then sent gift cards for delivery through Keough’s mail route, as a test.

On May 13, investigators said, a greeting card containing a Walmart gift card was never delivered by Keough to its proper address. He was seen on surveillance video using that gift card at a local Walmart store five days later, investigators said.

When questioned by authorities regarding the alleged mail thefts, Keough admitted he had stolen 20 to 30 pieces of mail during the span of several months while he worked for the postal service, according to federal prosecutors.

That prompted authorities to search Keough’s vehicle, were 679 pieces of mail were found, six of which had been rifled through, prosecutors said. Included in the bundle of mail were 11 gift cards.

Keough is no longer employed with the postal service, the prosecutor said.

  1. Gee, an “assistant” (non-career,lower paid, no benefits) was caught stealing?
This is happening all over the U.S. with this type of “worker”
We have no sanctity of the mail anymore! This is part of the priviatization
    agenda. So sad!
