A TV reporter for New York’s regional news network who set out to educate viewers on how the postal network operates also gained an appreciation for the job USPS does every day.

“Letters mailed anywhere within the five boroughs make their way to a mammoth facility called the Morgan Processing and Distribution Center on West 29th Street in Manhattan,” reported Roger Clark for the news network, NY1. The documentary — How New York City Works — featured New York District employees.

During the documentary, Clark showed viewers how USPS uses technology to read addresses and imprint barcodes. “This barcode has all of the information needed to direct the letter from here on out,” he said.

Clark watched as letters traveled along a “seemingly never-ending system of conveyor belts that transports mail from one part of the building to another.”

Clark followed the mail to a loading dock and then to a Post Office in the Bronx. He also accompanied Letter Carrier Iris Galan on her route as she delivered mail in the rain.

“Delivering an average of 10 million pieces of mail to New Yorkers each day…that’s anything but simple,” he concluded. “But we can sleep a little better at night knowing that people like Iris are on the job.”
