Newly hired letter carrier with history of drug use gets probation for mail theftDENVER, CO — A former Pueblo mail carrier who had a dependence on opiates was sentenced Wednesday to serve five years on probation for stealing drugs from the mail and taking them while delivering mail.

The judge said that a pre-sentence report prepared by a court officer determined that Mitch Buchanan depended on opiates as the result of having “a major depressive disorder” for years.

A postal customer on Buchanan’s delivery route called a postal manager on Feb. 23 and reported that Buchanan “could not stand on his feet,” states a court document signed by Buchanan and by a prosecutor. Buchanan, 30, worked from the Post Office’s Sunset Station.

The judge and Buchanan’s attorney, Assistant Federal Public Defender Matthew Belcher, said Buchanan had a history of overdosing and had been hospitalized once for a mental disorder. Read more

According to USPS records Buchanan was hired in 2014 as a City Carrier.
