Bags of mail reported to be thrown down Norfolk ravine

Norfolk couple finds trash bags of mail in ravineNORFOLK — U.S. Postal Service officials are investigating an incident in which a Norfolk man reported a letter carrier threw trash bags full of mail into a ravine.

Malikul Abdullah told The Virginian-Pilot the incident happened Tuesday afternoon near his home.

Abdullah says he retrieved the bags, which contained hundreds of pieces of mail, including bills, tax information and magazines. Some of the mail was wrapped in rubber bands.

Abdullah and his wife turned over the bags to a supervisor at a local post office. Abdullah also gave a description of the letter carrier.

Postal Service spokeswoman Freda Sauter says the mail was delivered the same day. She declined comment on the status of the carrier, adding that “appropriate actions” would be taken when the investigation is complete.

Abdullah said he described the letter carrier he saw to the supervisor, who recognized her.

“He said he would take care of this,” Abdullah said.
