Panic at the Post Office as Hundreds fail to file tax returns on time

Many expected a Salinas post office to stay open late, rather than close at 5pm

The post office on Post Drive is known for being open late on tax day. In past years postal workers have been out here in the parking lot collecting and post marking the returns until midnight. However for the first time in recent memory, hours were not extended, much to the surprise of all those who showed up.

“I’m really worried what’s going to happen now. All of us are standing. We thought it was going to be open,” said Salinas’ Sylvia Gutierrez, who stood at the locked front door of the post office looking for some sort of explanation.

People at the post office said there was no reason to expect that the office wouldn’t be open late Tuesday.

“I’m very disappointed. I mean every year this place is open until 12 o’clock, April 15th,” said Terrance Krentz, who was hoping to head to work after dropping off his return.

  1. Mack says: It’s not the employees it’s the people in charge, they really have no clue about customer service.

I say…Mack, Since when does any agency or company have to accommodate procrastination on any day of the year? How you or any other entitlement minded idiot can place blame anywhere other than at the feet of those that waited till the last second to file is beyond me. You’re probably the same that blames the teacher when your kid can’t read…or blames the mayor when you double parked in a no-parking zone and got your car towed? Its always everyone else’s fault.

  2. IRS dosent want to use us to mail out the books and forms any more.
Why should we stay open late to help them?

Its not like they have changed the day your taxes are due anytime recently…

Wait! I need to go buy a new Buick- They should be open until midnight to do that right?

  3. Perception is that it the service traditionally stayed open late, just as they did for Christmas eve. With the loss of many local plants, the practicality is simply not there.

While those in the industry were probably aware of the situation, it wasnt widely reported or prominently presented. The service should have partnered and coordinated with the IRS at the very least to get the message out to curtail disappointment and consternation. The IRS says local midnight is the deadline, yet effective physical deadlines might be as early as perhaps 3 or 4 pm because of office closing time and truck pickups. Clearly a mixed message.

  4. Well it looks like good old Terrance has his head under a rock. How could anyone expect a post office to automatically stay open till midnight with all the postal cutbacks going on? He should’ve checked. Now he can pay a penalty for being an idiot.

  5. Once again, we provide a CONVENIENCE and everyone thinks it should be a RIGHT. We are nothing but a convenience! We don’t provide “service” that anyone “needs”…it is a WANT!!! So, why is Congress in our business in the first place???

Ohhhhhh that’s right…the Unions own them, so they themselves can continue to rape and pillage the PO for membership dues and OT.

    Wake up people…

  6. You can’t say that the public wasn’t warned about all this BS going on… they just don’t give a damn until it hits them square in the face and in the pocketbook!!!! The best is yet to come from Postal Manglement (notice I did not say management) and their privatizing efforts with congressman Darrell Issa of California and his self-created controversy about the Postal Service losing money. The Republicans created this problem to force privatization and the American public swallowed it hook-line-and-sinker. Kudos to you John Q. Public for buying into this scam. If this works…UPS and FEDEX will be delivering your mail and it won’t be for 46 cents either! Close your eyes and let your imagination wander about how much it will be……………………

  7. It’s not the employees it’s the people in charge, they really have no clue about customer service.

  8. Boo Hoo. What a surprise, tax returns are due on april 15th? Who knew? Why doesn’t anyone give us a heads up on this stuff so that we aren’t late? Maybe we can say that the dog ate our forms, that used to work in grade school.

  9. This used to be normal operations on tax day. Blast from the past !

  10. I am so sick of these a* who wait until the last minute to pay their taxes! A lot of them will be getting a refund too. How stupid are they? I used to stand in the lobby and watch the idiots laying on the floor doing their taxes on april 15th!

  11. Solution, don’t wait until midnight on the 15th to file. Post Office should have never started this in the past. Give the lazy arses a way out and they will take it.

  12. Sorry customers!! It’s not our fault. We want to stay open late, provide the service the American people deserve. Unfortunately the Republicans ( Issa ) really don’t give a shit about you the customer and me, the postal worker. Please, Please, call your Rep and Sen and demand change!!!! Some communities are getting court orders to stay open. Obviously these customers haven’t been paying attention to what’s going on in the postal world. Hopefully now since it affected them, maybe they’ll DEMAND a change and get involved. It takes one simple phone call or email to their elected official..
