PMG not aware of decision to destroy ‘Just Move’ Stamps

It seems the media missed this part of the article.about the PMG..

USPS had planned on releasing a sheet of stamps in May to raise awareness about the importance of physical activity in achieving a healthy lifestyle.  The ‘Just Move’ stamps featured an illustration of a different child engaged in one of 15 activities, in addition to a short phrase or descriptive word in white text and an action verb in dark blue text.  But  for some unknown reason USPS decided to delay the release of the stamps until 2014.Why?

According to Linn’s Stamp News, the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition and Lets Move (a White House backed organization) raised safety concerns over 3 of the 15 stamps. The three stamps that the groups objected to were a swimmer doing a cannonball dive,  a child doing a headstand without a helmet and skateboarder not wearing  kneepads.

Fast Forward

Last week the media was in a frenzy about the Linn’s Stamp News article  by Bill McAllister titled “USPS to Destroy Press Run Of 2013 Just Move Stamps.”  Some media outlets tried to place the blame on First Lady Michelle Obama for the reason USPS put  the ‘Just Move’ stamps on hold. Many news outlets carried this  headline, “USPS to destroy stamps inspired by Michelle Obama.” However, the White House did not review the stamps until USPS Chief Marketing Officer Nagisa Manabe wanted Mrs. Obama to participate in the first-day ceremony. Again, according to Linn’s Stamp News, after the objections were raised,  Manabe–not the Postmaster General made the decision to destroy the press run of the Just Move stamps.  The PMG told Linn’s that he knew  the “USPS had been working with the White House over the Just Move Stamps, but was not familiar with any decision to destroy the stamps.” Also….

Roy Betts, a USPS spokesman, told Linn’s that the Just Move stamps are “on hold” at the Ashton-Potter plant in upstate New York where they were printed. Donahoe was not involved in the action, the source said. That is surprising since the postmaster general normally would have had to approve the stamp designs the stamp designs before printing could begin.

USPS told the media last Thursday that a final decision on releasing the revamped  Just Move stamps will be made sometime early next year.

Now we know how to get the public and the news media  interested in stamps –just mentioned Barack or Michelle Obama. This would be a great marketing strategy. Well, at least it is better than paying someone to over $500,000 to study the future of stamps.

  1. This apple polishing, or giving the knob a ‘special spit shine’ is alleged to cost an average of $90,000 for a typical production run of 40,000 sheets of stamps. The responsible USPS Marketing Executive VP is Nagisa Manabe. What else has she been up to? From the Federal Times:
“What might the future hold for the humble postal stamp? The financially challenged U.S. Postal Service is paying a New York consulting firm named Faith Popcorn’s BrainReserve more than a half-million dollars to find out.”
Here’s how Manabe describes her experience on her LinkedIn profile:

I have held a broad range of marketing and innovation positions at leading marketing companies since graduation from Harvard Business School in 1991. As of October 2011, I have joined Coca Cola Japan to lead the New Growth Platforms Business Unit. I also own and operate a successful yoga studio in the Princeton area. We have 15 teachers on staff and have classes 4-5 times daily. In addition to my work experience, I have worked as a chef in a Boston french restaurant, L’Espalier. I am also a devoted and passionate student of Iyengar yoga, and recently completed the Iyengar Institute of New York City’s 2009-2011 Teacher Training program.

    Specialties:
Marketing & Innovation, Beverage Alcohol, Food, Music and Fitness (Yoga)

Just what the USPS needs! Yoga!

  2. I don’t believe its an apple he’s polishing. More like his knob!
Helmets while doing hand stands? should tell that to the olympic gymnastics team.

  3. Must.Please.Messiah! Perhaps that is why the stamp commission is upset at being out of the loop on stamp design. Seems somebody wants to polish their apple on the company dime.

  4. Could have cut this article title to “PMG not aware” period, and it would be even more accurate.

    Clueless bozo.
