Independence police have one man in custody, while Kansas City police have a woman in custody after they tried to out run officers in both cities Tuesday afternoon.
The two were wanted for an aggravated robbery of a mailman that happened shortly after 1 p.m. on East 44th Street near Olive Street on Kansas City’s east side.
Police say the man approached the mailman and started going through his bag. The woman stayed in a nearby car.
An altercation ensued between the postal carrier and the man, with the man forcing the carrier to open up his mail truck.
The man then took some of the mail, and put it into his car.
The mailman was not injured, but according to police was “shook up” by the incident.
The man and woman sped off from the scene in a gray-colored Chevrolet Impala.
Kansas City police spotted the car a few minutes later near Est Truman Road and Troost Avenue. They began following the car but did not chase it. Kansas City police had their helicopter follow the car.

The Carrier should only employ “reasonable” resistance to a robber. If the Carrier pepper sprayed or otherwise injured the robber, then both the Postal Service and the Carrier could get sued, and the Carrier would be hassled relentlessly in litigation as a result. If the Carrier acted in an excessive manner, he might get stuck with his own legal costs. If you watch daytime TV, you will see armies of hungry lawyers that the injured robber could call to “get what he deserved” for his physical injuries and emotional trauma. For the Carrier, physical resistance is just not worth it. Let he police handle it.
