Police identify man charged with shooting at postal worker

Lafayette Police have charged David Sonnier, 39, of Lafayette on one count of attempted first degree murder and one count of attempted second degree murder, for allegedly shooting at a U.S. Postal worker on Thursday.

Sonnier was shot during a confrontation with officers in the driveway of a home in the 1100 block of West Gilman Road. He was released from a local hospital Thursday evening and booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center, Lafayette Police Department spokesman Cpl. Paul Mouton said.

Mouton said police were called to scene around 1:20 p.m. after a report that a gunman had fired at least one shot from a handgun into a U.S. Postal Service vehicle. Although the truck was hit by gunfire, the Postal Service worker assigned to the truck was not injured.

Mouton said the responding officer found the suspect — still armed — in the driveway at 1119 W. Gilman, largely a single-family, residential street. Police said that as a result of the confrontation involving police and the lone suspect, the officer fired at the suspect multiple times, striking him. Police would not disclose how many times the suspect was shot.
