A PostalReporter.com reader wondering why USPS is not concerned about the long delay in repairing Lyons Post Office in Clinton, IA. The customers must use Main Post Office in downtown Clinton while this PO is under “Emergency Suspension”.
According to the Clinton Herald:
Lyons Post Office still in disarray
June 19, 2015 CLINTON — Eight months have passed since a stormwater separation project along Main Avenue left the Lyons Post Office deteriorating and collapsing into rubble, and yet when motorists and pedestrians pass the now-vacant building, it’s in the same disrepair as that October 2014 afternoon.
It seems at this point the building will remain in its current state as the three parties involved work through the process with their respective insurance companies. The city of Clinton, BWC Excavating and Real Estate Development, the group that owns the building, are all being represented by their insurance companies and legal teams for negotiations, and for RED Incorporated, it’s been a frustrating series of months.
On Oct. 22, 2014, Solon-based BWC Excavating construction crews dug into adjacent ground to the post office for a city sewer separation project. What started as a 4-foot-wide hole grew larger as the building’s bearing capacity continued to lose its ability to support the building. And after the entire corner wall failed, collapsing without a prompt, the building was deemed a safety hazard, initiating a controlled emergency demolition by BWC.
Postal operations have been discontinued.
