Postal Employees without any fanfare go above and beyond in helping customers. People don’t realize postal employees do a lot more than just sell stamps, sort mail or deliver mail. Postal Employees are virtually the eyes and ears of many communities across America. Here are some brief stories of Postal Heroes for the month of November.
Carl DiBenedetto, Aliquippa, PA

Aliquippa, PA, Letter Carrier Carl DiBenedetto was delivering mail at a shopping center when he noticed a woman who appeared to be unconscious sitting in a vehicle. He contacted emergency responders, who couldn’t revive her. She was taken to a hospital, where she was treated and recovered
Emily Hawkins, Inman, SC

Inman, SC, Rural Carrier Emily Hawkins was delivering mail when she noticed a woman lying in a yard. The woman said she’d been on the ground for an hour after she fell and injured herself. Hawkins ran to get the woman’s husband, and they helped the woman get back on her feet. The couple thanked Hawkins before she continued on her route.
Michael Brown, Bristol, VT

Bristol, VT, Letter Carrier Michael Brown was delivering mail on his route a woman asked for his help. She led him to her husband, who was pinned under a riding lawn mower that had toppled over. Brown called 911 and used a wooden plank to raise the mower and free the man. Emergency responders arrived, and Brown continued on his route. The woman later went to the Post Office to thank Brown. She said her husband suffered injuries but would recover.
Camilla Peterkin, Julian, NC

Julian, NC, Postmaster Relief Camilla Peterkin was in the Post Office parking lot when she noticed a man sitting behind the steering wheel of a truck with his head down. She knocked on the window and spoke to the man, who said he was ill and needed help. Peterkin called 911 and stayed with the man until emergency responders arrived and took him to a hospital. Responders later credited Peterkin with saving the man’s life.

A letter carrier in Cypress, FL, sensed something was wrong when her mother in Cleveland, TX, didn’t answer her telephone. The letter carrier’s Postmaster contacted a Cleveland customer services supervisor, who asked Letter Carrier Laura Carson to stop by the woman’s house while delivering mail on her route. Carson knocked on the door, heard a woman inside crying for help and called 911. Emergency responders found the woman on the floor, bleeding from injuries caused when a TV fell on her. She was taken to a hospital, where she recovered.
Garry Hanson, Stoughton, WI

Stoughton, WI, Letter Carrier Garry Hanson was delivering mail when he came upon a woman whose daughter had fallen ill. Hanson quickly administered first aid until emergency responders arrived and took the girl to a hospital. The mother later sent a letter to the Post Office thanking Hanson. Without his help, the woman said her daughter “could very well have died.”
Harry Embrey, Rochester, NY

Rochester, NY, Letter Carrier Harry Embrey sensed something was wrong when he noticed a vehicle idling in the middle of a street near a busy intersection. The woman driving the vehicle was slumped over the steering wheel. Embrey knocked on the window and spoke to the woman, who rambled a response. While a bystander called the police, Embrey persuaded the woman to turn off the engine and hand him the keys. The police later said Embrey probably prevented a tragedy since the woman was in no condition to drive.
Harris and Nations, Federal Way, WA

Federal Way, WA, Maintenance Mechanics Mark Harris and Samuel Nations were working at the Network Distribution Center when they came upon a co-worker who had collapsed. He was having convulsions and difficulty breathing. Harris and Nations called 911 and began performing CPR on the man. Emergency responders arrived and determined the man had suffered a heart attack. He was taken to a hospital, where he recovered. Emergency responders credited Harris and Nations with saving the man’s life.
Michael Masters, Rochester, NY

Rochester, NY, Letter Carrier Michael Masters grew concerned when a customer hadn’t collected her mail in several days. He sought help from a neighbor, who discovered the woman had injured herself in a fall. She was taken to a hospital and treated for a broken hip. Her family thanked Masters for his diligence.
Rick Keeler, Lansing, MI

Lansing, MI, Letter Carrier Rick Keeler was on his route when he noticed a man take a package Keeler had left at a customer’s house. Keeler called police, who found the man preparing to steal a package at another residence. Keeler later learned the man was a suspect in similar thefts.
