The Canadian Union of Postal Workers is launching a constitutional challenge of Canada Post’s plan to axe door-to-door home mail delivery
OTTAWA – Representatives from seniors groups and organizations for people with disabilities joined the Canadian Union of Postal Workers today to launch a major legal challenge to the attempt to end home mail delivery.
In Canada, people should count, not just the bottom line, said Denis Lemelin, National President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.
The union announced today that a challenge will be filed in the Federal Court of Canada under Canadas Charter of Rights and Freedoms, asking the court to put a stop to Canada Posts termination of home mail delivery. The challenge will also argue that this decision is beyond Canada Post’s authority and should be made by the Parliament of Canada which created Canada Post and defined its mandate.
On December 11th, 2013, Canada Post announced that it would make Canada the only G8 country without home mail delivery. CEO Deepak Chopras bizarre statement that seniors would welcome the exercise of walking to collect their mail, as well as Canada Posts subsequent requirement of a medical note to retain home delivery without any consultation with doctors has caused additional consternation.
This is one of the most important postal decisions which has ever been made since Canada Post was created in 1981, said Paul Cavalluzzo, one of Canada’s foremost constitutional lawyers, who will be arguing the case on behalf of disabled and older Canadians.
While the Conservatives have attempted to distance themselves from Canada Posts decision, they are clearly backing the end of home delivery. Those who are filing the challenge say the Conservatives should be held accountable for ramming this through without proper consultation or debate.

If you’re so upset about the world as you see it…walk out…strike. Yeah, that’s the ticket…strike! The public will back you all the way! They’ll have to call in the National Guard to push those on/off buttons and those brooms to clean the bathrooms. Oh…wait a minute…the National Guard is deployed fighting a real war! Sorry…you’re screwed!
obvious…you are hilarious and so idealistic. You think unions are not lying pieces of incompetent shit, corrupt to the rafters and incredibly abusive to their craft wherever they can get away with it. You think unions are not rich and powerful? Do you think they got that way by respecting those less fortunate? Take a look at some of the cribs where these union bosses live. It ain’t in your neighborhood for sure. NEVER believe management or their ad campaigns…that’s what Hostess employees were told by their union along with, “Vote for me and I’ll set you free…rap on brutha, rap on!”
I used the links to find out more about this article, which, like too much news on the net or in media period only gives about half the pertinent information. It’s deliberate, slanted and piss poor journalism, but that’s a different story for a different time.
What Canada Post is doing is eliminating door to door delivery in urban, not rural areas, and replacing them with “community boxes”, our U.S. version of NDCBU’s and cluster boxes. That does not mean end of street service, it means the end of park and loops.
The USPS has been trying to do that but the public opposition has been ferocious, and those plans are not getting very far.
Which brings me to my point: if anybody can save the USPS from its incompetent leadership, it’s the public. We employees can have informational pickets and other events to raise public awareness, but it’s the customer who can take the ball and run with it. The four unions are planning such an information event next month, and one hopes there is enough participation to make legislators feel a little pressure considering reform and the way Donahoe is systematically destroying the Service with making our services even harder to access, closing plants against the wishes of cities and customers, and doing what the GOP haters of anybody who has a decent job tells them to do.
When will people understand that the rich and powerful didn’t get that way by respecting those less fortunate? The rich want it all, every goddamn bit of it, regardless of whether it wipes out the middle class, which, in return will wipe out the country because the rich will not have anybody left to buy their products or invest in their banks and stocks. They simply do not understand that point. It would eventually come back to destroy them too, but not before the rest of the country, and most of the world is left in a third world status.
The survival of the country depends on economic security, and having a middle class that can spend and keep the country prosperous. The factories can’t sell their products, they close. Banks fail, and you’re left with a society right out of 1984 or worse. We need our USPS to thrive, for its workers to have the wages and benefits they earn and deserve, and make itself more accessible, not reducing standards and then running commercials about how their number one priority is the customer. Bullshit. NEVER believe management or their ad campaigns. They are lying pieces of incompetent shit, corrupt to the rafters and incredibly abusive to their craft wherever they can get away with it. You need to know this, public. Tell management through your legislators that what they’re doing is suicide. Demand PMG Donahoe be fired immediately. We need your help so you can still get decent mail service.
