Protect Overnight Delivery Act

Rep. DeLauro Introduces Legislation to Reinstate Overnight Delivery StandardsWASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) today introduced the Protect Overnight Delivery Act. The bipartisan legislation would reinstate overnight postal delivery service and prevent the Postal Service (USPS) from operating under the current, weaker delivery standards. The elimination of overnight delivery has already resulted in slower mail delivery for millions of Americans.

“Again and again, members of Congress said to the Postal Service: do not unilaterally eliminate overnight delivery or close postal facilities. The Postmaster General should not preempt Congressional action and, in the absence of a comprehensive bill, Congress should move forward with this legislation. With over 140 facilities already closed, and another 82 set to close in the coming months, Congress must act.

“At a time when millions of Americans are still struggling to pay the bills, it would be particularly inopportune for USPS to close more facilities and cut jobs. More closings would also hurt businesses that depend on overnight mail delivery to reach their customers. Just last month, the Postmaster General stated that current service standards could even delay returned mail and payments to collectors.

“Our postal workers do an extraordinary service for the community and should be treated with the respect and gratitude they have earned.”

The postal processing facility in Wallingford, Connecticut is among those that face closure due to the elimination of overnight delivery standards. Over 500,000 people are employed by the Postal Service in the United States, more than McDonalds, Wal-Mart and Starbucks combined.

DeLauro introduced similar legislation in the 113th Congress. 59 representatives have already signed on as co-sponsors to the Protect Overnight Delivery Act.

  1. Well said, larry king. I fully support the Unions fighting for and winning good benefits and good wages for their members. However, EVERY member needs to be willing to “step up to the plate”, and be willing to do their part to ensure the mail gets processed and delivered in a timely manner EVERY TIME, EVERY DAY!! Just because their is a large enough number of “knuckleheads” in Management that are endangering the viability and survival of the USPS, we as members do not need to follow their lead by being incompetent ourselves. If some of our fellow members are only willing to “just get paid”, we need to “put our money where our mouth is” and make sure we do our jobs, EVERY DAY!

    • sounds like a propagander moment form po mismanagement…..I will work hard, when you stop losing bilions! start by cutting po mismanagement 50%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Funny how congress is so worried about how fast mail is worked. What have they done for us? Maybe they should put the money where their mouth is. Give us something for a change. Stop the prefunding payments for all the employees that will never retire from the post office. ( no more fulltime positions with benefits) There needs to be some give and take, not just tell us what to do.

  3. When it comes to the USPS its the same wine just a different bottle. Step up hang on to your glass, these fools will continue to dismantle the system.

  4. Final someone understands customer service. So true most of management does not understand what is going on , had two supervisors come form mail processing and knew nothing about management
tried to help but they knew it all, One was made to go else where and the other that had days was moved to nights. We tried to help them but they kept up with their old ways. Had people take retirement and transfer from the plant. Yet management won’t admit to there mistakes.

  5. I am also support congresswoman rosa DeLaura ‘ legislation to reinstate overnight delivery standard 100 Percent ! Let’ s give her a applause !!!!! We need more congress and congresswomen to do the right thing to stand up for this!!!!!!! We also need all our good America ‘ people , everyone of us to stand up and fight for this!!! For us !!! For the future of our America’ s postal service !!!!! For the future of our communities !!!!!! Lower service standard to eliminate overnight delivery ( delaying mail) and closing 82 more mail processing centers ( plants) will cause more & more delaying mail ,loss of more good living wage jobs in our community all around the country, and also cause an adverse economic impact to the communities that depend on good service. The cuts in service will cause hardships for public and small businesses, destroying jobs, and breaking down the efficient and affordable delivery network by driving away mail and revenue !

  6. Stop delaying America’ mail ,stop lower mail service standard to eliminate overnight delivery , stop closing 82 or more mail processing plants and stop destroying ( privatizing) our America’ s postal service are all our America people ‘ s duties in my opinion ; I see our America ‘ postal service as our national treasure ! The best mail system in the world ! It is our pride ! We should do our best to improve to delivery our mail faster not slower and delaying mail ! That is ridiculous ! Every American should call the congressional members : (2022243121), the postal board of governors :(202)2684800) 475 l ‘infant plaza sw Washington ,dc 20260. Postmaster general (2022684264) 475 l ‘ entrant plaza sw Washington dc. 20260 and the president of the United states (202)4561414 to stop all these ! United is power ! With all our American fellows ( ladies & gentlemen ) stand up and call the congress, the postmaster general, the postal board of governors, the president of the u.s.a to send them this message and stop ” delaying our mail and our America ‘ s postal service” ! I believe we could prevail ! ! The congress and the postmaster made these masses , they need to fix it ! Our America’ people ,citizen do not had to suffer from the mistakes they made!!!!!!’ Enough!!!!!! Unough is enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Thank you, Congresswoman DeLauro! Please don’t stop there…we need to repeal H.R. 6407 ( Postal Accountability & Enhancement Act) Our Postal Service is a common good. Protect it from forces that would privatize!! Again, THANK YOU for you hard work & great service!

  8. Let’s hope you’re successful getting that bill out of committee and to a vote. I’m sure by now you Congresspersons have figured out that the management in the Service is incompetent, lies like hell, and has no clue how to keep the USPS competitive. For starters, you don’t increase product by cutting a day of delivery. That’s very elementary, and the lack of understanding on management’s part shows they got there through favors, nepotism and the good old boy network. Real producers are left in craft because management relies on us to give themselves exhorbitant bonuses and take the credit for what we as carriers and clerks do.
Good luck with making this bill law, and please include language to stop the pre-funding requirement and further closing of plants.

    • They need to return to the original postal standards and re-open the facilities that were closed and still remain open 24-7. The Postal Service needs to be re-vamped from the top down. Each Mail Processing Facility pretty much operates as a rogue unit. There is no organization, leadership, or sadly any sense of urgency from management or membership to see that the mail is delivered in a timely and efficient manner. The top leaders of the Postal Service are doing what they can to destroy the postal service from with-in and are doing a fine job of it. Changing delivery standards, making changes that they say will save money but are actually creating more cost, bringing in mail processing equipment that has no prayer of increasing productivity only creating more cost and hiring of management personnel that have no skills or common sense. Don’t get me wrong although the majority of the blame is at the higher end of the management team the membership must also take some of the hit as well. We were hired to do a job and you need to put in a full days work to ensure that that job is accomplished. That should be the Unions Motto not come to us if you don’t want to do the job you were hired to do and we’ll make it all better because your paying union dues. How sadly things have changed over the years. From top to Bottom its not about accomplishing any goals its only about getting paid for not accomplishing goals and the reality is that is how to destroy a company!
