Rep. Dennis Ross Applauds PMG Donahoe on Modifying First-Class Mail Delivery

WASHINGTON, Feb 6 – U.S. Rep. Dennis Ross (FL-15) issued the below statement in support of the U.S. Postal Service’s decision to modify its delivery to five days, thereby eliminating Saturday delivery for first-class mail, but allowing the continuation of package delivery. Rep. Ross was the Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Federal Workforce, U.S. Postal Service, and Labor Policy last Congress.

“I applaud Postmaster General Donahoe for making the tough decision to reduce postal service delivery of first-class mail to five days. I believe that the continued viability of the USPS is in every American’s interest and we must continue to work together and make a concerted effort to streamline and modernize the Postal Service so it can meet the needs of a 21st Century economy.”

Background:

-Since 1984, there has been an appropriations rider carried in law that ties the USPS to six-day delivery of mail. Rep. Ross and Rep. Issa introduced H.R. 2309 on June 23, 2011. Included in H.R. 2309 is a provision recommending that USPS provide for a five-day delivery of mail.

-Last year, the U.S. Postal Service accrued a $15.9 billion loss.

-Eliminating Saturday delivery of first-class mail will save $2.5 billion taxpayer dollars annually

  1. Ross applauds PMG for a “tough” decision. Not if you ask me, he’s trying to take an easy out. He’s not trying to save the USPS, he’s trying to kill it. He’s going to wait till it’s nearly down the drain then he’s going to bail out and leave the rest of us with nothing. He needs to go, along with Ross and Issa.

  2. Ending the Bush mandate to pre-fund retirees for 75 years in advance would make the postal service solvent onernight! That is the true hidden problem that the general public has not been made aware of. Ross and especially Issa have not let any positive reform legislation especially any that includes eliminating the pre-funding mandate even come to the floor for a vote. They have their own hidden agendas and I’m sure it is one that would benefit themselves or their wealthy political campaign contributors in the future at the expense of hard working postal workers and taxpayers.

  3. No Douche Bag… Tax Money pays your salary (and I must say it’s a waste of tax money)
We pay our own way asshole… unlike the rest of the Government.. you want that 7.5 billon, for our retirement why? OH yeah so you can pay the Military.. You n Issa and the rest of the PO Upper Management should be tossed to the curb and let people who’ve done the job run the show.. stick your computers and surveys… they don’t get the job done.. we know what it takes. we don’t need Managers up our ass.. we know what our job is and who to take care of.. YES thats right take care of… WE TAKE CARE OF OUR CUSTOMERS.. bring back the carriers of old,, who were trained and were held accountable.. not these idiots you hire now.. back off and let the Carriers show ya how it’s done !!!!

  4. Dennis Ross is right it will save taxpayers money. It will be $2.5 more billion dollars a year that congress can steal from the USPS by claiming they owe it some way some how. This will help save taxpayers money as the Postal Service subsidizes the federal gov’t even more than it already does.

  5. Duh. The PMG said in his statement that the USPS does not receive tax dollars. So only a moron like Ross would make a statement like:

-Eliminating Saturday delivery of first-class mail will save $2.5 billion taxpayer dollars annually

  6. how will it save 2.5 billion taxpayer dollars? the Postal Service relies solely on money from postage, not tax payer dollars
