Rocky River Municipal Court in Ohio abandons USPS for more costly FedEx

fedex-uspsPR note: Clerk of Courts Deborah Comery, a Republican, lists affiliations, memberships with Pitney Bowes, Inc. and United States Postal Service National Pilot Program to create an electronic certified mail system.  She also lists as accomplishments: “Installation and implementation of the E-Certified Mail System (that is Certified Mail with Electronic Return Receipts via the US Post Office).

The Rocky River Municipal Court is changing the way it mails court documents, saying it believes commercial carriers offer more dependable service than the U.S. Postal Service.

The court will begin using FedEx Signature Service to deliver court documents within the next 30 days, Clerk of Courts Deborah Comery said Wednesday.

The court previously used U.S. Postal Service Certified Mail, but Comery said the court is making the switch because it believes service will be improved.

“We want to do the best we can do at the most reasonable price as possible,” Comery said. “That’s the driving force.”

Comery estimated that just 65 percent of the court documents the court sends via the USPS reach the intended recipient on the first attempt. She’s estimating that the switch to FedEx will raise the success rate to 95 percent.

“For us not to use the best service available would not be in the best interest of those the court serves,” Comery said.

A Postal Service spokesman said Thursday that he’d reached out to the Rocky River Municipal Court to discuss its concerns. He also provided the court with information about other Postal Service shipping options, such as Priority Express Mail.

“I honestly have no way of addressing the initial service percentages [the Rocky River Municipal Court] mentioned, but it’s probably moot as it is somewhat similar to comparing apples to oranges,” the spokesman said.

App.R. 13 and 14
The amendments to App.R.13 and App.R. 14 promote consistency with the 2012 amendments to the Ohio Rules of Civil Procedure. The amendments will allow service by electronic means and use of commercial carrier services. The amendments also extend the “three – day rule” to other service methods, e.g., commercial carrier services that do not provide same-day delivery to the recipient

  1. She does realize that most courts only recognize USPS post marks for timeliness in filing for court documents. In addition, if the people are not home when the mail man knocks on the door, why is fed ex going to get a better response. Most attorneys will tell me that they don’t care how long it the mail takes as long as their certified receipt is round dated.

  2. lets do a poll….how many think deborah is getting a kick back….. how many think she just cares that we get our court charges

  3. i estimate that deborah uses about 2 % of her brain. see i can throw bull sh.,/t numbers out there to you republican jack ass.

  4. this country is falling apart at the seams stop these scumb bag politicians from robbing this country from all thats left.

  5. This lady is pulling numbers out of the air. When the sloppy court system sends out mail to people who has moved, who will forward it? The 35? % that it’s delivered is due to sloppy addressing & people who move wo changing their add. She is full of it.

  6. Disregard the previous posts!! I’m just a stupid craft employee that doesn’t know any better.

  7. Citizens of this U.S.A. if you believe this story the ocean front property in Oklahoma is for sale.Nothing down and the state will pay the note.
This lady knows she’s lying and may God have mercy on her useless soul.
    (1). Republican
    (2). Membership with Pitney Bowes
(3). U.S.P.S. Pilot program to create an electronic certified mail system.
The never ending lies will amount to Union busting, destroying of the present mail system by the R.R.Muni Court system.
Statement of confusing; For us not to use the best available would not be in the best interest of those the court serves,Who might that be?
Republicans and their constituents, hell bent on privitizing the present mail service. “Heavens to Betsy”, the USPS deliver UPS, and FED EX mail to most rural areas. Go figure that.
(4). Fed EX is more costly and that serves who’s best interest?
American citizens, whenever this madness ends the best interest of the USPS mail dependent citizens will not have been taken into consideration at all.
You will get your usual mail at an exorbitant rate, and only God know when it will arrive, and how!

  8. From another poster. So true: USPS business model: raise prices, decrease service, drive more customers away=increased revenues?

  9. Postal mgmt/eas costs the USPS yet another customer. Similar actions have happened in my office.

Wanna bet, the clowns in this office, the same morning, gave the carriers the “generate revenue” speech ?
