Senator Lautenberg: USPS 5-day delivery decision circumvents the clear will of Congress

Lautenberg Statement on Postal Service Announcement

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, U.S. Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ), Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, which has jurisdiction over the U.S. Postal Service, issued the following statement:

“It is unfortunate that the U.S. Postal Service has made a unilateral decision to move to five-day delivery in a matter of months when serious questions remain as to whether piecemeal efforts like this one will do anything to secure the Postal Service’s long-term viability.  Furthermore, this move circumvents the clear will of Congress as expressed in the law over three decades.  There is a real need for comprehensive postal reform and I have supported such efforts in the past.  What we need—and what I will continue to work towards—is a comprehensive solution that thoughtfully examines every way we can strengthen the Postal Service so it can continue to serve all Americans far into the future.”

  1. This Congress is a joke. They do nothing. This is a good step in the right direction and I as a postal employee support it.

  2. circumvents the clear will of congress? what clear will? the problem is congressional inaction.
lautenberg is growing senile. it’s time to retire old man.

  3. Piecemeal effort? 30 years service and this is the most common sense decision that I have seen.
