November 13, 2015 In a radio interview yesterday, Sen. Rand Paul said that if he were to become president, he would pare down the federal government so much that he might even do away with the U.S. Postal Service.
Rand Paul joined Iowa talk radio host Jan Mickelson, who played a clip of last week’s Republican presidential debate in which the Kentucky Republican said that he wants “a government really, really small, so small you can barely see it.”
Paul told Mickelson that this microscopic government might not have room for a postal service. “I think the federal government ought to defend us from foreign attack and have a judiciary and, let’s see, I would say the post office, but they screw up the post office too, so we really don’t even need them for the post office,” he said. “So I want a government that’s really small.”
“I would have a country that defends us from foreign attack, a country that sort of keeps the peace and a country that has a judiciary, a legislative branch, but a country where the federal government didn’t do much,” he added.

calm down you postalized cradle to grave useful idiots……..Donald Trump 2016-2024 will be the next president. you will have a great business mind who loves America instead of a America hating Maoist mussie playing for the other team. Hillary will be in prison in 2016!
Don’t think I care for this guy, but I’m fully supportive of getting rid of the postal service. Husband retired from there. They are a very poorly run bunch. They need to go.
post office is one of the goverment places that makes makes money for the country. not take from tax payers, looks like it would be more money for big business like his rich buddies
I like how this senator, who is clearly a member of the federal government, refers to “they” and “them” when discussing a part of said government that he wants to discard.
government member of congress, everyone knows that the PO has been run into the ground, but they keep quiet like they do not want to talk about the retarded member of the family. sell it off to UPS & FDX and make it part of the contract that the po union have to be kept for 10 years and can not be layed off. you might just like being a Teamster…….they get more than crummy 1% raise. the po just lost another 5 Billion…..what other company would still be in business losing over 90 Billion since 2009?
In 2005, the USPS processed a record 217 BILLION pieces of mail. We had record profits. Congress wanted a piece of that pie to balance the federal books to pay for the war. They imposed a 10 year pre-payment expense on the USPS to fund future retiree health benefits. Despite the fund already being 80% solvent, they wanted $5 BILLION per year for 10 years payable to the treasury to fill this fund 75 YEARS INTO THE FUTURE.
ALL of the so-called losses are on paper only. Operationally, once the nation started sliding out of recession, the USPS has posted an operational profit. The pre-payment fund is not needed at all. But for Republicans who want to privatize the P.O. saddling it with debt was the way to go.
Never mind that the USPS is mandated to break even. We are not by law supposed to have profits. Nobody has lost “over $90 billion since 2009.” The Post Office is older than the nation itself. Where are all the constitutional patriots when it come to the USPS? Republicans hate unions, they hate government, and they especially hate government unions. You have been fooled into spouting numbers that have no basis in reality.
Yes, who would protect the PEOPLE against big business who want to be able to do whatever they like? Who would protect us from companies like Volkwagen deliberately ensuring their vehicles pass emissions? Who would protect the American People from Oil price, food price and other gouging? Yes we would just be gouged to death while the rich keeps making their money. It is sad when you hear of a Senator who wants a government so small they are ineffective, you know much like the “too big to fail” companies who were all bailed out. This guy Rand Paul, why not do away with his position as Senator, after all he is too busy trying to eliminate government protections of the American Citizens. Next he will have a government so small they can’t see the illegal immigrants crossing our boarders or the trade agreements eliminating jobs in America so big business can take the work overseas for a fraction of the cost. Sad really sad, he should be advocating for a more efficient and effective government that enforces the laws. Instead he wants government so small he can’t see it, and neither can those violating the laws, rules and regulations.
I would to do away with congress. They manage to screw up quite a lot of things. They are so busy protecting business from those nasty workers, congress doesn’t have time to do anything. Ok, they involve our country in wars, and enable business bastards to hoard money.
Paul Rand has about as much of chance of being the U.S.President as Bernie Sanders does. If we r lucky the idiocy and lunacy will fade and the 2016 presidential race will between Hillary Clinton and John kasich. Or at worst, the Republican will be Marco Rubio?
Would he “pare it down” to the size of his current poll numbers?! WOW, now THAT would be small!!!!!!
Bye bye Rand nice too see you try again and again…do away with the only agency in Government the people actually have a positive view of. Perfect Rand you make no sense at all. By the way why would you stick a knife in your own campaign with a system that delivers advertisement for your campaign for free to you? Brilliant move
And that’s why he’ll not be president.
The USPS receives no tax dollars
What an idiot!!! The Constitution Requires the Federal government to maintain a Post Office. He does not have the authority to change the Constitution without a vote from 75% of the public!!!
All this so big business can charge what they want and get big retirement and health benefits on the back of taxpayers .
Since when have we had a smart government, giving big tax breaks to the rich , wanting to reduce Social Security & health benefits ,not repairing roads and bridges .spending more money on overseas projects and not taking care of the problems in the U.S.A.
Health care keeps rising ,better retirement plans are needed and last but not lease jobs for Americans.
So, he is willing to just toss out the Constitution!? Sure don’t want someone like that for Pres!
