Senator highlights reliable mail service as key to keeping next generation in rural communities
WASHINGTON – At a Senate hearing today to consider a nomination for the Postal Regulatory Commission, U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill pressed the nominee to prioritize reliable mail delivery for Missourians living in rural communities. McCaskill serves as the top Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which has jurisdiction over the United States Postal Service.
“I’m really worried about the quality of rural mail service,” McCaskill said. “I hear from people all the time in Missouri about the increasing service delays, and the key to rural Missouri in terms of them keeping people in their communities—keeping the next generation in their communities—is in fact reliable mail service, because many of them are starting small businesses. The one-two partnership that is essential for rural Missouri is high speed broadband combined with reliable mail service. That is where you can start businesses and allow businesses to thrive—no matter where you live—if you have those two ingredients.”
The hearing was held to consider Michael Kubayanda to be a Commissioner on the Postal Regulatory Commission and Steven Dillingham to be Director of the Census.

McCaskill has long worked to improve postal service and hold the agency accountable, particular for Missourians in rural communities. Last month, she announced that following her advocacy, the Postal Service had successfully fixed a quirk in which some Missouri residents had Iowa and Arkansas mailing addresses, causing unnecessary problems for the affected Missourians. She alsoled a bipartisan group of 41 Senate colleagues in a resolution making clear Congress’ opposition to privatizing the Postal Service. Earlier this year, she sent a letter to the Administration’s Postal Task Force, urging it to prioritize reliable access in rural communities and improved delivery times.
McCaskill called for postal reforms after a Postal Service Inspector General report found that mismanagement led to up to two billion pieces of delayed mail. She called for answers from the Postmaster General following reports from Missouri postal managers that their staffing needs have been disregarded. McCaskill also joined a bipartisan group of Senators to introduce a comprehensive postal reform bill that will put the Postal Service on firm financial footing, improve performance in rural communities, and allow for the development of new products and services. She is widely credited with having waged a successful campaign over several years to save rural post offices in Missouri and maintain delivery standards.
