A former treasurer for APWU South Dakota state Postal Workers Union has been charged in federal court with embezzlement for a theft of more than $36,000 from the union.
Susan Marie Haugen, 55, was indicted this week on one count of embezzlement and two counts of theft of labor union assets for a series of transactions that took place between May of 2010 and March of 2014.
The grand jury accused Haugen of making more than $25,000 in unauthorized cash withdrawals from the union’s bank account and using the union’s credit and debit cards to spend another $11,000. All the money was used for personal expenses, the indictment says.
Haugen was charged with making unauthorized cash withdrawals from the Union’s bank account in the approximate amount of $25, 100, using the Union’s debit card to make unauthorized purchases for her personal use in the approximate amount of $6,425, using the Union’s credit card to make unauthorized purchases for her personal use in the approximate amount of $4,784.53.
Each theft count is punishable by up to five years in prison. Haugen’s initial appearance date has not been set.
