USPS Press Release
WASHINGTON, Feb. 14, 2013 — The U.S. Postal Service released the results of a new survey today showing 80 percent of Americans support the new six-day package, five-day mail delivery schedule announced last week that the Postal Service intends to implement the week of Aug. 5, 2013. The survey, commissioned for the Postal Service, was completed by Ipsos, a leading independent market research company.
“These survey results illustrate the strong public support for our new delivery schedule in communities across the country,” said Postmaster General and CEO Patrick R. Donahoe . “The American public understands the financial challenges of the Postal Service and supports this new delivery schedule as a prudent, responsible and reasonable approach to address our urgent financial situation.”
The survey, conducted between February 8-11, shows consistently high support for the new six-day package, five-day mail delivery schedule among urban, suburban, and rural communities as well as among all age groups and income levels.
Survey Question: Do you support the decision of the Postal Service to begin delivering mail five days per week and packages six days per week, including continuing package delivery on Saturdays?
All | Communities | Income | Age
respondents | Urban | Suburban | Rural | <$50K | $50K+ | 18-34 | 35-54 | 55+
Support |
80% | 81% | 82% | 76% | 78% | 82% | 79% | 79% | 83%
Oppose | 20% | 19% | 18% | 24% | 22% | 18% | 21% | 21% | 17% |
Support rose to 85 percent among all respondents when asked if they would support the new delivery schedule if it helped stabilize the financial situation of the Postal Service. The survey included responses from 1,002 U.S. residents ages 18 and over and has a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percent.
Market research previously conducted by the Postal Service and independent research by major news outlets indicated that nearly seven out of ten Americans (70 percent) supported the switch to five-day delivery as a way for the Postal Service to reduce costs in its effort to return the organization to financial stability. By maintaining six-day package delivery, support for the new delivery schedule increased to 80 percent support according to the recent survey results. While recent surveys conducted by major news outlets again show seven out of ten Americans support moving to a five-day mail delivery schedule, the USPS poll results are slightly higher because it emphasized the continued six-day delivery of packages and that the new delivery schedule would help improve the financial footing of the Postal Service.

Babull on rtw, for what your typing has told me is that you make alot of assumptions and don’t really know what’s going. So take that paycheck and run. Oh, enjoy your vacation, its on the union.
Hey R T W, definition of scab: a worker who refuses to join a union [a slang term, as found in a free online dictionary website]. As far as the compensation provided by the NALC, imagine what the corporate compensation of the CEO would be for a business that had 230,000 employees. U say that President Rolando makes $220,000 in total compensation, and the average letter carrier makes around $70,000 in total compensation. That would be a bit than 3 times the wages of the average employee. How many CEOs in this country make 3 times what the average employee makes? I found…..none, when I attempted to search this compensation comparison. Are u green with envy, or just bitter?
your so called union reps are scabs also I GUESS BECAUSE THEY DONT PAY DUES EITHER.SURE THEY pay dues but then the union gives them the money back. and depending how high up they are they get back double and more.and most of them dont do anything for them. dont even attend the meetings They have some body pick up there checks. one last time the. THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT IS A RIGHT TO WORK WORK PLACE YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BELONG TO ANY UNION TO HAVE THIS JOB. I DID NOT TAKE NYBODYS JOB I TOOK A TEST AND WAS TOLD I DID NOT HAVE TO BE IN THGE UNION TIO KEEP KEEP MY JOB. AND JUST FOR YOUR INFO DEFINATION OF A SCABA strikebreaker (sometimes derogatorily called a scab or a blackleg) is a person who works despite an ongoing strike. Strikebreakers are usually individuals who are not employed by the company prior to the trade union dispute, but rather hired after or during the strike to keep the organization running. “Strikebreakers” may also refer to workers (union members or not) who cross picket lines to work.
Strikebreakers are employed worldwide, often occurring wherever workers go on strike or engage in related actions. However, strikebreakers are used far more frequently in the United States than in any other industrialized country.[1] The Mohawk Valley formula calls for the use of strikebreakers when dealing with striking employees.
Still do not understand your point. Is the NALC your employer? Is the NALC the union that gets you your wages and benefits that you work for?
We know the answer but you don’t refuse those things because you enjoy the standard of living they provide.
So your a scab and living off the dues of your fellow workers and your whining about it.
Complain about the post office to the post office and see what it gets you.
Instead, why don’t you pay your fair share of what someone else gets for you and stop living off them, or quit.
You don’t “have to stay on” you like being a leach.
After 20 years on the job and the fact this is a right to work job. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE IN THE UNION. to Have this job I will Stay on as long as I have to. AND IM NOT WHINING IM JUUST SHOWING FACTS ABOUT THE NALC LEADER SHIP

If your so sure and you can’t stand what you see in the PO, get out and the whining will stop on these blogs then.
Quit hiding behind the union for your wages and benefits and prove that you have what it takes and not just typing BS.
Im sure in the private sector id have a job . im not so sure the union reps would.
I work my ass off for 8 hours a day. while most union reps hide and break most of the rules they tell us not to.
if it’s a survey by the p.o., you can can be sure that it’s inaccurate and the numbers are fudged. pack mule, if you work for the p.o., i ask why? it’s a union job! enjoying those ‘living wages’?
Oh yes, look at the savings and then look at the wages you would earn for that work. Can you say minimum wage?
Right to work should get his own contract to work under and see what the pay and benefits (if any) would be.
Can you say minimum wage and none?
Every residential route should be cut to 3 days a week. A carrier could carry rt 1 MWF and rt 2 TTS with a floater for the NS day. Any one that wants more can rent a box. Look at the savings!
The first figure is gross yearly salary only. the second is with benifits. so I say to lies lies all lies

Union dues pay for exclusive retirement benefits that ONLY “career” union officers will get to enjoy. Not a lie…just ask at your next union meeting but expect to be met with a lot of boos and demands that you sit down. Its a touchy subject that the union doesn’t want much discussion on. Another touchy subject is “superseniority” which protects union stewards by allowing them to bump senior employees (and yes, even war veterans)when it comes to excessing and downsizing. Wouldn’t that be funny to pay union dues and wind up getting sent to Timbuctu while the junior employee remained in the office ONLY because he/she is a steward? Oh…the response will be that the steward has to remain behind to file grievances. Right..
The National Union has 223 members. Their average TOTAL COMPENSATION is $67,167.23. The salaries you list include total compensation. The same way craft employees are told that their overall compensation is beyond $80,000. There are currently 74 Union officials making more then $75,000. Fred Rolando is the only union member making more than $180,000. The union made slightly more than 12 million dollars in political contributions last year. What industry doesn’t try and curry favor with Washington? Why do you think the Republican controlled Congress hates unions so much? Could it be that they’ve managed to achieve living wages and good benefits for their membership? I’m not a flag waving union member, but without it we’d be Walmart. Your the one that needs to wake up.

The NALC has a 100 million in investments? I’m sure they’ll be happy to hear that. I’m also sure that union officials will be happy to hear they make $180,000. A T6 or floater is responsible for 5 routes not one. And doesn’t have the benefit of picking up a nice piece of change at Christmas. Call a sick out? This organization is under attack and you want to give our enemies ammunition. I’m sure your aware that it’s illegal for us to strike. I agree it wasn’t a good contract, but given the circumstances we were fortunate to get we we got. We maintained no layoff protections which Issa is out of his mind over as well as the right to collectively bargain. Without a politically active union trust me, we’d be in a helluva lot worse condition
im so ashamed of the last contract I still have not told my wife about it. I know its the best the union could do . the problem is back in 2006 when things were good we still only got 2 percent a year.its a civil service job we could do better. them thing is letter carrier always its the best we an do thats bull we work hard and deserve better. maybe if the union had the balls like the postmaster. to make a stand call a sick out or go to jail we could do better. but there only interested in there own 1800000.
The Nalc has 100 million in cash and stock in its coffers. yet when you retire after 30 or 40 years do you know what you get nothing. its not a strike fund its not for dental benefits. it only goes to senators and congressmen to vote they way the nalc wants them to. which isnt always right.yet if your lucky enough to be high up in the union im sure the 1800000 yearly salary comes in handy when they retire. compared to the 1500 a month in going to get after my 30 years.explain how umen and floaterss get paid more then regulars.how a letter carrier with 37 years gets paid he same as a carrier with 12 years.its just stupid. no area wage all things the union should address but dont
If Saturday’s stop being a deliver day, and the PO budget doesn’t improve, what day will be designated to be eliminated next?
All those who want a 2 day weekend will be seeing more surveys on that decision by the public soon if 6 day does end! Quote me on it.
How does going to 5 day delivery create more jobs? The Postal Service is trying to break the Unions which offer it’s employees the only protection they have. It’s so blatantly obvious. Some people can’t see the Forest through the trees. So sad
here is how stupid this survey is. more people 55+ support it than any other group. yet tehse are the people that are not dependent on computers. also there is no more sancity of the mail.I worked there. any terrorist can drop off packages at po, not just postal anymore. donahoe must go
THE PUBLIC HAS SPOKEN. NOW…LET’S HEAR FROM THE EMPLOYEES!
I am also a career postal worker. While unions will fight this and create customer service issues and fiascos, the bottom line is that this will create more M-F jobs which we are all in favor of. The unions are more fearful of their coffers and maintaining their lifestyles…not to mention their Union Officer Only Retirement funds paid for by union dues that the ordinary “joe” dues paying member will not be allowed to access when they retire. It’s time to force the issue on unions and their politico cronnies that don’t give a damn about what the employees want. I’m sure if you passed around a survey to the employees they would overwhelmingly support M-F workweeks however, the unions would never allow that. Screw em!
Jim must’ve been 1 of those lazy people now is bitchin. I’m TE he’s been carrying a vacant lot for 3 years. None of the regulars will carry it Because it’s over 15 miles of walking a day… and on top of that now I get to take a 6 dollar pay cut. with 5 days of delivery I’m going to lose my job.
As a temporary carrier were already taken a 6 dollar an hour pay cut. Now it looks like most of us lose our jobs.
1002 People surveyed. Wow. The 5 day delivery would put about 1,000,000 people out of a job. Look at the big picture. It’s not only postal jobs That people would lose. What up what about all the contractors That have mail related jobs . Anybody could say 2,000,000,000 dollars when you lay off 1,000,000 people. Why start at the bottom cutting jobs why not start with management It doesn’t take 3 managers to manage 10 people And that’s the ratio .
This survey ties into the CBS poll that said over 70% was ok with no mail delivery on Saturday. The union beef with this is with less employees they will have less members, less members equal less dues, less money to donate to the Democratic Party, less money to spend on a convention in an exotic location for the Union big wheels and the select few from all the local branches. They don’t care if they suck the system dry, no matter how much sense a serious cost cutting move makes.
WHAT A CROCK !
Lets try out this postal plan if it saves the PO $, and our jobs.
The public is wright,We have to end saturday mail, its time to get smart. Recently retired, I know the unions protect LAZY PEOPLE WHO WANT FREE MONEY FOR NO WORK UNIONS ARE NOT THE SAME I worked in maintance for 33 years Ive seen it all ,carries that hide on the street, those that hide at work its sad. Custodians that are flat LAZY this has to stop, 8 hrs work for 8 hrs PAY get real people things change half of the people should retire the unions have caused about 1/2 of the pos problems
The economy collapsed in 2008, two years after the PAEA mandate. That’s why it passed without much notice
Funny thing about this is that as far back as five years ago when the PO saw the writing on the wall and we began hearing about how bad it was going to get during standup talks, everyone (including unions) resigned themselves to the fact that things were going to need to change. When, last year, the dems proposal outlined the end to Saturday delivery within two years, no one balked. But now that it’s suddenly on our doorstep, everyone is in a tizzy and running about with hands in the air as if this came out of the blue. You knew changes were coming. And guess what, they’re here. Did you think that ridiculous prefunding requirement was a fluke? Do you wonder why the USPS didn’t protest when it was passed? This whole thing has been orchestrated to quicken the inevitability of what is about to occur. Enjoy your Saturdays off.
test
hmmm did i read this right no rate increase in the near future?? but no timetable on that?? please.. any usps employee knows what that means. read the survey… does it even mention the prefunding payments..of course not.. now ask…if we were able to stop that and be more stable, would saturday delivery still be ok. please fellow workers, dont sacriface multiple layoffs for you to be able to get a day off when you know in the end, it could be you next!!
Sounds interesting – but who will be delivering what parcels? Large and small? Small parcels left in mailboxes on Saturday will probably sit there until Monday as customers stop checking their mailboxes on Saturday.
Each route in our office receives 60-100 parcels on a Saturday. It will take just as long to deliver the parcels as it will to deliver the mail.
And Monday after 2 days off? Ask a carrier what happens the day after a Monday holiday – three days worth of mail. Even without the parcels it will take a lot longer (overtime!) This will happen every Monday. And the new schedule after a three day weekend? FOUR days worth of mail! Unfathomable!
It will be a disaster and will not save the $2 billion promised.
Let’s do a survey with the following question – would you rather lose a day of delivery or a postmaster in every post office. Let’s see what the public chooses!
Not one to go back and forth, but somethings pack mule said that just stuck with me. As Brian said, comparing a good middle class job to slavery? Wow. Also I didn’t call the public idiots, but rather made a reference pertaining to the limited selection of 1002 people the survey was conducted on being fairly easy to sway to the direction you would want depending on the demographics involved. You hammer the reason I listed that us “flaming libs” talk about, but completely ignored the points I made concerning small business and rural America, areas predominantly touted by the right. I personally love and support these small businesses as they are the only ones that keep the profits stateside anymore. Unfortunately, while most folks aren’t idiots, they are uneducated concerning (as you are) the actual woes of the Postal Service. The Service lost 1.3 Billion in quarter one of fiscal year 2013, but this is completed contributed to the mandates congress have draped across our backs when we were being used as their personal ATM. The actual operation of delivering the mail by the Postal Service resulted in a $100 million profit in that quarter. Yes the first class volume is down, but we are not yet the horse and buggy. With all the red flaunted in the media concerning the Postal Service, 80% was directly attributed to the PAEA passed in 2006. What business didn’t suffer during the great recession? I agree changes need to be made, and believe they will be. But don’t cut off your nose in spite of your face, even if it is so upturned.
he public has spoken. and as a 20 year letter carrier. I can tell you on most Saturdays on my route as well as the many overtime routes Ive done on Saturday nobody is usually home. IM sure most people are shopping or out doing one thing or another. what can they do with there mail on saturday. most banks are closed at 1 no dmv no lawyers are open. that just leaves bills which thay can pay on line if they had to. the post office is still open if they need to go parcels will still go out with medcine. the only thing the union cares about is losing dues money.try calling the home office on saturday im sure there no working on saturday. but maybe they should be at the 180000 a year the top 20 or so union men make.
Gee, lets ask a question that provides an answer that we want.
Try this one for example.
If you were in business and 17% of it was created on Saturday and you decided to stopped working that day to save 2% of your budget, would your accountant call you stupid?
What? People cited in this survey chose 5 day delivery over the potential for price increases or the demise of the Postal service all together. Nobodies talking about layoffs? Thanks to the Union there’s no layoff protection. Your analogy of slavery is as stupid as it is offensive.
“What Public” does’nt have a clue. First he starts by calling the public idiots, (normal union democrat behavior) second what is wrong with giving carriers weekends off? The junk mail can wait until Monday, we don’t deliver mail on Sundays and that has not ended the world like the unions would have you believe. The reasons given by the democrats and unions have been addressed (medicine, packages delivered offices open on saturdays)and no one is taling about laying off anyone. Third, by your reckoning, just because slaves were fed and clothed meant that slavery was ok too? The combination of declining volumes, e-mail/texting, an ambivilent public, and a welcoming carrier response mean that its time to do away with 6 day. The horse and buggy industry had their reasons for wanting to keep the automobile off the roads too at first, but had to change with the times. The unions and the dems are guilty of trying to force the po to provide something that the public have told you (and have demonstrated) they don’t need. Typical.
I am a career postal worker. I hate to see the service deteriorate, but I think the new schedule makes sense. Unfortunately, these are the times. Package delivery 6 days is a good idea. You cant expect us to go into the future with an outdated model and still make profits. I would however like to see some of the money coming back in from FEDEX and UPS that the USPS contracts out to…if they are making big money on our packages, and we are going to sit on the first class mail until Mondays, then we can handle more packages….and more revenue.
Could not agree more with what “What Public” stated. No successful business eliminates one of it’s two competitive advantages.
Lets also start eliminating executive and management positions. The ratio is 1 manager for every 7 workers. Ridiculous. You have too many supervisors supervising supervisors.Anyone who doesn’t handle the mail is overhead. They offered early out for EAS, how many left? 1800? Offer it to Carriers watch the mass exodus
Makes cents; cost reduction and service is not reduced.
Politicans need to stop their attempt to ignore the USPS
LOOSING 16.+ billion annually and will continue to increase as revenue generation will continue to decrease under present mode of operations. Need to increase parcel and shipping as revenue to increased from prior year.Congress needs to help USPS SOS and quit game of politics with no concern for cost as it presently operated.
The public has spoken? It says they polled 1000 people. That’s hardly more than the idiots they find to answer the family feud questions. Sure everyone wants weekends off, but we’re in the SERVICE industry. You want weekends off find an office job and work in a cubicle all day, Monday through Friday. Universal Service keeps rural and small business on an equal playing field and helps keep our economy strong. Less service will equal less new business in one that has already lost much. You knew what you were signing up for when you were eyeballing that job making over 50k plus benefits a year. We need to keep the service strong, ditch this shrink to survive strategy, and seek ways to grow in this new economy.
This is true and many people I speak to think it would be great to let these hard working postal employees have weekends off for their families. Let the new position CCA’s train working weekends and using them to take overtime away. These postal employees are beat down they do get paid well but they earn it. Many of the new hired employees don’t make it and quit. Don’t let the Unions who only help employees who don’t want to work, and who file grievances for Greedy reasons not taking into account how great this company has been to all postal employees for hundreds of years. Instead they are killing the USPS just like what happened to Hostess. These Unions are not like the old time great Unions the ones today are evil and worried about how many members they have. The great majority of Postal Employees want Saturday delivery eliminated because they all know its a joke delivery day. The biggest thing here is finally this may help all the hard working employees who have dedicated so many hours to this company and never see their families while all the people calling the shots have every weekend off. Its time for employees to be treated better and the backbone of this company is the employees. Let them have family time and two days in a row to rest their hard working bodies which I might add are not machines. Next Evaluate the routes and Salary them you want to see a huge savings and carriers off the street by 5:00 pm instead of 9:00pm? Again I think the most important thing is family and these employees have no family life. The time is now stop Saturday and give them your hard working employees a life back which they have worked hard for.
