Joseph Leon Paulo — the 45-year-old Live Oak man accused of gross vehicular manslaughter in the death of Concepcion “CB” Johnson — surrendered to authorities at Sutter County Jail after a warrant was issued for his arrest on Friday.
In addition to the charge of gross vehicular manslaughter, Paulo is facing a special allegation felony enhancement for leaving the scene of the crime and a charge of felony driving under the influence. At 4:05 p.m. on Friday afternoon, Paulo was booked into Sutter County Jail. Within an hour, he had posted bail and was no longer listed as an inmate on the Sutter County Jail’s website.
On the morning of Nov. 14, members of Johnson’s family, who were putting up missing person fliers — said in an interview with the Sun-Herald that Johnson was last seen leaving a local bar with a man — now determined to have been Paulo — who they said returned to the bar later that night, alone.
Johnson, a U.S. Postal Service employee who worked behind the desk at the Colusa Post Office and was well-known in the community, was found dead in an irrigation canal two miles west of Colusa on Lurline Road later that day.
According to District Attorney John Poyner, Paulo left Rocco’s Bar with Johnson in Paulo’s truck on the night of Nov. 10.
