Tampa postal inspector admits to stealing money orders from mail

Tampa postal inspector admits to stealing money orders from mailA Tampa postal inspector resigned in disgrace in July and admits to embezzling $5,000 in mailed money orders before reporting his lapse to a superior, a new court record shows.

John P. Ebsworth-Mojica, 40, said in a plea agreement filed Wednesday that he took a parcel containing five Postal Service money orders worth $1,000 each, all purchased in March and mailed from an unidentified Tampa post office.

His plea agreement describes him brazenly using his own checking account at the Tampa Postal Federal Credit Union on June 12 to cash one of the money orders, which bore his signature.

He sent one to his mortgage company, applied a third to a Bank of America credit card bill and unsuccessfully tried later to deposit a fourth into his checking account, the record said.

It was rejected. The person who bought the money orders had by then reported the loss.

On June 23, Ebsworth tried to cash the fifth money order at a post office in Puerto Rico but it, too, had been reported and was seized, according to the plea.

The next day he told his supervisor of “an unspecified ethical lapse” and turned in his official vehicle and electronic devices.

  1. sentence the ex Postal Inspector to 30 years as a CCA! Otherwise he will become a cop somewhere. Maybe in Chicago. If he is forced to become a CCA he will be kept busy scanning every day, and be screamed at.

  2. And these are the people “Watching us” are you kidding me! Hypocrites and just goes to show you what the Postal Service elite are really doing!

  3. Being a Postal Inspector, he should know how these crimes are being investigated, he left a trail that led right back to him. What a moron!

When I steal, no one knows if stuffs were missing.

    • One bad apple or a culture of corruption and lies? The chief inspector was forced out due to spending improprieties just a few years ago. I’ve been around long enough to have worked for the pig when he was still in P&D.

Promoting almost exclusively from within has not been serving the Post Office well at any level.

  4. It seems to me that law enforcement in this country has caught up with lots of countries where their own police and government officials are automatically regarded as the real crooks, corrupt to the core.
Postal inspectors are after all supposedly charged with stopping postal crime from both the public and within the ranks of employees and management. We’ve read a couple stories this year involving corrupt inspectors, and it doesn’t exactly install faith in the institution.
But the postal world is no different in most ways from anywhere else. Witness the abhorrent murder of the young man in Chicago, where a deranged cop shot him sixteen times when the youth was walking away from him. And need we be reminded of Baltimore or Ferguson? There is corruption in smaller cities and towns too, make no mistake.
But it’s an axiom that one bad apple makes the whole bushel rotten. For every horrible cop or city police department there are many more who are good honest cops. Same with the USPS. For every dirtbag inspector, corrupted and crooked manager there’s tons of decent ones, too. Media makes us all think the most negative possible thoughts because it makes money for them and nobody covers good news, do they?
Still, wrong is wrong, and perhaps a broad investigation into the Inspection Service is warranted.

  5. Resigned ?

The crook better be charged, like any other postal employee would be.

  6. What a stupidly arrogant guy. “An unspecified ethical lapse”,is when u cheat on ur spouses. Here’s a person who is supposed 2 nab such criminals; being that lawbreakers himself. I always thought, the Postal Inspection Services, was better than ur typical group of morons.
