We’ve heard from people across the country about why they support the U.S. Postal Service. From paying bills, running their small businesses or receiving medicine, the Postal Service enables our daily connections. But often lost in why the mail matters is the simple act of handwriting a letter and dropping it in the mailbox – showing someone you care for just the price of a stamp. In today’s digital world, the mail is a vital connector between online and in-person. So we were delighted to discover the Letter Writers Alliance when they recently highlighted the Mail Matters campaign on their own blog.
Since 2007, the Letter Writers Alliance has worked to ensure that the “rare and wondrous” art of letter writing stays alive. Its founders Donovan Beeson and Kathy Zadrozny were inspired to create the Letter Writers Alliance after repeatedly hearing that people loved receiving letters but were not taking the time to write or send them. They came up with a solution to “network letter lovers together” and the Letter Writers Alliance was formed.
The organization now has more than 5, 000 active members who participate in pen pal swaps, mail art contests, letter writing socials and workshops. Members have access to handmade stationary, postage kits and stamps – and all are shipped via the Postal Service, of course. Donovan and Kathy also run a blog featuring postal news and updates from the letter writing world. It’s all aimed simply at enabling people to “write more letters.” In fact, Donovan estimates their members send over one million letters a year out of pure love for the communication form.
We recently reached out the founders to see why the mail matters to them. Keep reading our Q&A below to see why Donovan and Kathy believe in letter writing and what the Postal Service means to their organization.
