NEVADA, Iowa —Postal Service officials reported Thursday that a truckload of mail was destroyed in a truck fire along Interstate 35 near Ankeny on Tuesday.

The majority of the First-Class Mail and Priority Mail items were either severely damaged or destroyed. The driver was not hurt.

The driver of the truck was not injured, according to a Postal Service news release. The truck contained mail tendered in Nevada and being transported to the mail processing and distribution facility in Des Moines. The loss of mail may affect customers expecting postal mail or packages in the areas of Ames, Nevada, Gilbert, Ellsworth, Jewell, Kamrar, Randall, Blairsburg, Roland, Garden City, Radcliffe, McCallsburg, Williams and Dow.

U.S. Postal Service officials tell KCCI News it will take a couple of days to sort through the charred mail.
