LANDOVER, Md. (WJZ) Prince Georges County Police are on the hunt for the person who shot and killed a mailman as he was making his last few deliveries. Now union leaders are asking for the district manager to step down.
Police have not said if the man was robbed to at least give an idea of the motive behind his murder. Union representatives are now demanding a change to save lives.
His murder is now a call for change in policy.
Union reps say letter carriers work under a substantial amount of pressure and many try to make their deliveries under the safety of day light, but with cutbacks thats not always possible.
In a statement to WJZ, a spokesperson with the U.S. Postal Service released a statement saying We are all deeply saddened by this tragic incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and co-workers of Tyson Barnette. The safety and welfare of our employees is our primary concern.
But postal workers beg to differ, expressing deep concern and fear for their lives at a candle light vigil.
Union Leaders Demand Policy Change After On-Duty Murder Of Md. Postal Worker
I fully understand what some people are saying. Some I just dont understand. If you have a mind of your own and really think about things they are true this could happen at anytime. Yes it is so unfortunate that we had a carrier out late delivering the mail and they were shot. Let’s ask ourselves a question – If the carrier was shot at 2 in the afternoon would we then be saying that the job is not safe to deliver then? Honestly we have signed up for the job that we have. We were made aware of risk being out in the public. This trajedy is not the podium to stand on to push for change. We just need to continue to point out issues and not use this young mans unfortunate situation to push our goal. To all the union people speaking up or quite frankly to all speaking up we need to look at where things will lead us. Making this an issue with management is not only helping the idiots in congress but truly giving them fuel for the path they wish to lead. Let’s keep pushing towards the privatization of the USPS and then we really don’t have to worry about another senseless murder that idiots will then say is on management. Some of you need to really think before you speak.
John Long Island, if you actually were a carrier, you would know that this has been going on, nationwide, for over a year.
That means in summer too, which means your time of the year bs is just that.
Like I said, if you were actually a carrier, you’d already know this.
Idiot postmistress at a local office had a front and center Tuesday and actually had the nerve to say this wasn’t a problem because this carrier could have been shot during daylight. THESE ARE THE IDIOTS PUT IN CHARGE! I’m beginning to hope this place goes out of business soon
Yeah, you betcha the Service’s number one priority is our safety. They’re also very concerned about the safety of the LLV fleet, late deliveries or in many cases none at all because they got in such a hurry to get rid of people, and I’m sure are taking our concerns very seriously.
We can be assured that shortly management will announce adjusting plant hours, institute a nationwide hiring campaign for said plants, move carriers to more reasonable start times like 7:15 or 7:30, and adjust routes properly to insure eight hour delivery times.
That is, we can be assured if we have the brain of a gnat. Only a very gullible idiot would believe anything a manager tells them. It’s good some legislators are getting involved – it may be the pressure needed to force these culpable retards to do what’s right, because they won’t do it on their own, especially under the horrifying leadership of Patrick Donohoe, the most destructive PMG in postal history, probably going back to Greek and Roman times, when important messages were delivered on foot and those bearing bad news were executed.
First off, I do walk 7 hrs a day, Work at night (alot of carriers here do) in the winter times because of the time change. So while I am working and someone shots me it managements fault….Do you se how ridclious that sounds. Renaldo the only loser is yourself and the pathetic group that calls themselves a union…How about you get rid of the loser carriers who won’t do their job and people like me have to pick up there slack. The union only protects the bad carriers..If you got a raise based on performance things would be different…Also the union backs Obama who put in his budget for 5 day delivery…Open Your Eyes
@ Long Island
The union is “terrible” for wanting safe working conditions for carriers???
Yes please walk a mile in my shoes
Yes, Long Island John, it is entirely correct to blame management.
No excuse to be delivering mail that late.
Yes, you are a disgrace also. Not to mention a big baby.
Get out of the union, you are a loser. Why don’t you volunteer to change crafts, mail carriers are always needed. Get your loser ass out there
delivering mail at night and you’ll sing a different tune.
Loser.
A man gets murdered so Blame management….This is ridclious…We should be helping the family, getting the community involved to clean up the streets….The union should be ashamed of themselves and now I am definetly leaving this terrible union….Disgraceful..
100% go screw yourself Ken
100% privatization
Have the district manager make the rounds with a few of the carriers. I know the district manager won’t. Its to much danger for them. Come on district manager are you chicken. It’s easy for you to sit in your office and say your sorry. GET OFF YOUR FAT ASS AND DO SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
