USPS is marking the milestone opening of the nation’s 500th Village Post Office (VPO).

The new facility opened in a hardware store in Greenwood, CA, Jan. 28. Postal officials from San Diego and Sacramento gathered with the store owners for a ribbon cutting.

“Pacific Area, and Sacramento District have the distinct honor of hosting this grand opening of the 500th VPO in the country,” said Pacific Area VP Dean Granholm. “The Postal Service has reached this milestone incredibly quickly.”

Owners Janice and Jerry Hoyt expressed their excitement over finding another way to serve their community. When they purchased the Georgetown Divide Supply in 1999, they realized the Greenwood area needed more than a lumber store. What they didn’t envision was one day adding postal services to their hardware lines.

The Greenwood VPO expands the Postal Service’s presence in the community by offering extended hours and a location to buy stamps and pre-paid packaging.

“We’re working to be more aggressive than ever in finding opportunities for new VPOs, to both increase customer access to our products and services and increase revenue at the lowest possible cost,” Granholm said.

VPOs are an example of the Postal Service’s commitment to providing customers expanded access to the postal products and services they most often use. VPOs are typically located in established local businesses, giving customers the opportunity to do their mailing and shipping in more convenient locations. Often, VPOs are open for extended hours.
