USPS is commemorating one of the most resounding victories of the War of 1812 with its Battle of Lake Erie Forever stamp.
The stamp features a painting of Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry transferring from his ruined flagship, the Lawrence, to the Niagara, during the Battle of Lake Erie. Following the transfer, Perry attacked and demolished the British ships Detroit and Queen Charlotte. He then penned one of the most memorable phrases of the war in a report to General William Henry Harrison: “We have met the enemy and they are ours.”
“The Postal Service’s commemorative stamp program honors America’s history, heritage and heroes to bring both historical and contemporary subjects to life,” said Eastern Area Vice President Joshua Colin.
The Battle of Lake Erie Forever stamps will be available in sheets of 20 beginning Sept. 10 at usps.com/stamps,, by calling 800-STAMP-24 (800-782-6724) and at Post Offices nationwide.
