USPS: Dismounted delivery helps save customer’s life

Greensboro, NC, Letter Carrier Tracy Belden.

Greensboro, NC, Letter Carrier Tracy Belden had left her vehicle to deliver mail to a residence on her route when she found the customer who lived there lying behind her car and bleeding from a cut on her forehead.

The elderly women had fallen while walking to the car. “She was very feisty and was trying to get up, but she couldn’t,” said Belden. “She was badly injured, and I was trying to help her.”

The letter carrier asked a passer-by to call for help. Together, they used a towel to help stem the bleeding. An ambulance arrived and took the woman to the hospital; where she underwent emergency surgery.

The 86-year-old customer suffered a blood clot, a broken nose and an orbital fracture above the eye. She is recovering.

“To be there for our customers is what we all strive to do,” said Greensboro Customer Services Supervisor Deirdre Haith. “Tracy went above and beyond just being there. The customer may owe her life to Tracy, and we’re very proud of her actions.”

  1. Luckily for her she had not been “converted” to a more efficient centralized delivery system.
