and to Raise Awareness

In an effort to stamp out breast cancer, the Sacramento,California postal district put a campaign in gear by decorating two U.S. Postal Service vehicles with pink hubcaps and large pink ribbons adorned on the sides. The two vehicles departed from the northern part of the district in Yreka, CA and the southern part in Clovis, CA on Sept. 15, 2014. The vehicles will make special stops at select Post Offices along the way and meet at their final destination at the district office in West Sacramento on Oct. 9, 2014.

This is the first year for the Breast Cancer Awareness trucks, but not the first effort by the postal district to be the first in the country to reach the ultimate goal of selling the one-billionth Breast Cancer Research (BCR) semi-postal stamp. It has been a targeted goal from the very beginning, and the postal district intends to reach it this year. Since its inception in 1998, the semi-postal BCR stamp has raised more than $79 million for research from the sale of 975 million stamps sold.

Dr. Ernie Bodai, CEO of the non-profit CureBreastCancer, Inc., and a Sacramento Kaiser Permanente surgeon, will be available on certain routes. Dr. Bodai was the driving force to persuade congress and the USPS to create the first semi-postal stamp for the precise purpose of raising much-needed funds for breast cancer research. He has dedicated a major portion of his life to raising funds to combat the disease.

About the Breast Cancer Research Semipostal Stamp
The Breast Cancer Research semipostal was issued on July 29, 1998, at a first day ceremony held at the White House. It was the first semipostal in U.S. history. The Breast Cancer Research First-Class® semipostal 60-cent stamp is being reissued in 2014. The price of a semipostal stamp pays for the First-Class™ single-piece postage rate in effect at the time of purchase plus an amount to fund causes that have been determined to be in the national public interest. The stamp art depicts a woman standing with her right arm raised, reaching behind her head in the position recommended for breast self-examination. The drawing of the woman’s body is set against a background of pastel colors from yellow to violet that cover the entire face of the stamp. Across the top of the stamp are the words “Breast Cancer.” Circling the figure’s right breast are the phrases, in all caps, “FUND THE FIGHT.” and “FIND A CURE.” Art director Ethel Kessler designed the stamp using original artwork by Whitney Sherman.
