USPS: Election season deadlines

Know these dates when handling Election and Political Campaign Mail

The Postal Service is reminding employees and customers of the deadlines for sending Election and Political Campaign Mail as the general election — to be held Tuesday, Nov. 6, — draws nearer.

Nov. 3 is the deadline for mailing First-Class Political Campaign Mail and returning First-Class Election Mail traveling within the contiguous U.S. Nov. 1 is the deadline for these mailings if they travel from the contiguous states to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or U.S. Virgin Islands and vice versa.

Standard Mail Political Campaign Mail and Standard Mail Election Mail traveling within the contiguous U.S. must be mailed by Oct. 27. If these mailings travel from the contiguous states to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or U.S. Virgin Islands or vice versa, the mailing deadline is Oct. 14.

Employees accepting Political Campaign Mail after these deadlines must notify the mailer and/or candidate that the mailing may not be delivered in time for the election. Employees must also record this information in the comment area of the postage statement and in the Political Mail Log, along with contact information.

Election Mail accepted after October 15 must be documented using the Late Submitted Official Election Ballot Mail Log.
