USPS expects to deliver between 450 million and 475 million packages during the holidays, up roughly 12 percent from last year. UPS projects it will deliver 585 million packages, up 11 percent, while FedEx expects to move 290 million shipments, an 8.8 percent increase.

To meet increased demand, the Postal Service shifted this week to a seven-day delivery schedule in more than 100 cities and high-volume areas.

“The Postal Service will be out making deliveries every single day during the holiday season, including Christmas Day,” PMG Pat Donahoe told reporters this month.

There’s more good news for shippers: While the Postal Service’s competitors recently announced price increases, USPS has lowered some Priority Mail prices for businesses and frequent shippers.

“The Postal Service is a vital business partner for small and large businesses and lowering shipping prices will save them money and improve their bottom line,” said CMSO Nagisa Manabe.

The price changes are part of an ongoing push to boost the Postal Service’s package business. Last week, USPS reported its shipping volume grew by 300 million pieces in the fiscal year that ended in September, an 8.1 percent increase over the previous year.
