February 25, 2015 – KALAMAZOO, MI — The U.S. Postal Service anticipates job openings in Greater Kalamazoo and Southwest Michigan.
With that in mind, the service, which has been in the news in recent months for its plans to close its Kalamazoo Postal Processing Plant on 9th Street in Oshtemo Township, will host an informational job fair on March 4.
Sabrina Todd, communications spokeswoman for the USPS Greater Michigan District, said that while most of the mail sorting and processing work the center now performs is to be transferred to facilities in Grand Rapids, there are still jobs that will need to be filled in the future in this area.
After its work is transferred on or before April 18, part of it will be used as a hub for trucks transporting mail from the Kalamazoo area to Grand Rapids for processing.
They said it will also mean 100 to 120 postal workers in Oshtemo Township will have to find jobs elsewhere. Todd said bargaining teams for the unions and USPS management were looking to make sure those workers had places to go, and she said it is likely they would have the opportunity to apply for any of the jobs discussed at the job fair as well as positions that open as others retire or leave the service.
Why have a job fair in a place that is slated to lose jobs?
“This is just an informational job fair to speak about potential job positions at surrounding postal offices in the area and that was just to just the most viable place to hold it,” Todd said. Read more

For the carrier positions, potential applicants must have a valid state driver’s license, no suspensions, a safe driving record, no DUI’s and at least two years (without a break) of documented driving experience.
All applicants for all positions must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening to meet the Postal Service’s requirement to be drug free. Applicants must also be a U. S. citizen, a lawful permanent resident alien, or a citizen of a territory owing allegiance to the United States.
I bet some of you can guess what my thoughts are on this plan. Just more of attempting to show that USPS really cares about their folks. Just beware that all you guys in the MI plant that is closing, it will still be your job to find someplace to land. Also, plan on the local PO’s in your area to not be very supportive of your arrival, remember you will be crossing over to the carrier craft for the most part. Wish you the best. Good day.
hows that hope and change thingy working out for all who voted for that creep in the white house. get ready for another 1% yearly raise lol. ( true inflation 6%) oh yeah……demonrats are out for the little guy……sure. I have a bridge in brooklyn that I can sell you for 50% off! but wait sheeple………shillary will soon be telling you how she is going to help you………yeah, yeah, that’s the ticket. dumb as dirt! the definition of insane is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result…….sound familiar? I want my locality pay and I want it now…….but fly over country told us to shut up. my take on plant closings in mid-west….who cares! karma baby!
What on earth does this have to do with the story you stupid moron? Take your nonsense someplace else. We’re here to discuss Postal issues not your dislike of the President. Our previous union leadership is to blame for the mess we are in today, and the President didn’t vote them in and he certainly had nothing to do with our contract. I can’t stand idiots like you.
Somehow The left hand still don`t know what the right hand is doing. The Stupid factor keeps rising .
What? No job fair for displaced managers? Oh, yeah, I forgot, managers never lose their jobs.
These are all non-career positions and the Kalamazoo employees are Full-Time Regulars who have to be placed in FTR positions…typical of stupid ass management to do this.
that’s exactly right its better to move onto the next plant keeping all your pay & benefits, if you gotta commute or relocate its still better than taking one of these jobs just to stay.
