USPS implements new Policies and procedures for deaf and hearing-impaired

Communication accommodations
The Postal Service has implemented new policies and processes for providing certain types of reasonable accommodations, known as communication accommodations.

Communication accommodations are designed to enhance or improve effective communication for and with employees who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Each district, area and headquarters has designated a “disability coordinator” as a point of contact for employees who request communication accommodations.

Disability coordinators will serve on Reasonable Accommodation Committees (RACs) to help develop individual accommodation plans and respond to any issues raised by employees concerning compliance with their plans. Disability coordinators also will document requests on PS Form 6710, Communication Accommodation Request Form.

A stand-up talk on communication accommodations has been distributed and should be given to all employees by May 9, 2014.

Employees who want to request a communication accommodation may contact their supervisors, managers, disability coordinators or RACs, verbally or in writing.

  1. Good to see that the USPS is finally stepping up and implementing things that the normal business community was required to do years ago.
