Municipal Court staff discovers theft of mail from its U.S. Post Office box
Early this week, Lawrence Municipal Court staff noticed there was no mail for two days in its U.S. Post Office box located at the Lawrence Post Office at 645 Vermont St. This is a rare occurrence. Staff approached the Post Office personnel and determined mail was stolen from the post office box. The Court immediately reported the events to the Lawrence Police Department and worked with the Post Office to ensure the court’s mail at the U.S. Post Office is secure. The police department reported the incident to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. A joint investigation is ongoing.
The Lawrence Municipal Court staff recommends anyone who mailed payments or documents to the court in the last week take the following steps:
1. Contact Lawrence Municipal Court at (785) 832-6190 to find out if payments were received.
2. If check payments were not received, contact your financial institution to cancel the payment. It would also be prudent for persons who mailed check payments, in the past week, to monitor their financial accounts.
3. If documents, including diversion applications and agreements, motions, orders, or other correspondence were mailed to Municipal Court, contact the court to find out if they were received.
“We take this matter very seriously. We are working closely with law enforcement and the Post Office to determine how this occurred and take steps to keep it from happening again,” said Vicki Stanwix, Municipal Court Administrator.
