usps network rationalizationMore than $2.1 billion will be saved by the end of 2015

The Postal Service will move ahead in 2015 with the next phase of its plan to consolidate up to 82 of its mail processing facilities. Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.

Package Services and Priority Mail will not be affected

The Postal Service expects to capture $2.1 billion in total annualized savings from Phase 1 and Phase 2 network rationalization when full-up.

Single-piece First-Class Mail volume, the product most affected by Phase II, has declined 53 percent in the past 10 years. This mail consists largely of personal correspondence, bill payments, greeting cards, etc. When sent locally, it is currently delivered within one day. Beginning in January 2015, this mail will be delivered in two days.

Package Services and Priority Mail® will not be affected and will be delivered based on current service standards. This includes most medications and small business shipping.

Network rationalization has resulted in no bargaining unit layoffs. There will be a methodical transition for employees in the affected mail processing facilities.

Changing service standards and right-sizing the Postal Service’s processing and retail infrastructure are necessary aspects of a larger comprehensive plan designed to reduce overall operating costs by $20 billion by 2017, return the Postal Service to financial stability and help ensure the future of the nation’s mail system.

  1. The harmful impact of closing 82 processing plants : . Slow down the mail . Make mail delivery unreliable. Lower revenue & drive away patrons. Hurt seniors ( who depend on the America ‘ s postal service to delivery their mail( social security checks…….) ,medicine……. To survive). Hurt small businesses and mailers. Eliminate up to 15,000 jobs nationwide. Damage local economies in 37 states facing mail processing closures !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Exaggerated savings for diminished service::::::::::::::: . The postal regulatory commission recently look at the usps mail processing cuts : noting that ” phase two will trigger enormous revenue losses, the prc forecasted net saving as low as $ 46 million which is only 2 % of the 2.1 billion in saving the usps claims . The prc urged the usps to pursue alternatives that preserve service level and to delay ” phase two ” implementation until a study is performed to ascertain the actual net saving of ” phase one ” . The usps has ignored these recommendation!!!!!!!!!! Your support to stop these ” delaying America’ s mail ” & ” to stop the 82 plants ” closures is urgently needed !!!!!!!! • As a City Letter Carrier 27 + years, I look at the parcels as I deliver. Luckily, I was trained on the Window while healing from CTS bilateral. I was taught the very important basics of parcels. 1. Media mail is for books, sheet music, tapes, records only! While delivering parcels, note if it states Media Mail. If so this may be inspected and if any other component of that parcel is something else, customer must pay Parcel Post, or Priority Mail rates. Return parcel to Clerks or supervisor for inspection. If we carriers were trained in this way many funds would be saved. Also, watch for correct lbs. listed on printed labels. We carriers are the final source. God Bless all you carriers. I know it is getting crazy on the street. Especially as we age~not as fast as we were.
