Parcels are moving faster than ever through five USPS plants that are testing new small-package sorting equipment — and exceeding expectations.
Since installing the machines earlier this year, the Postal Service has found they can sort more than 6,000 small parcels per hour, or roughly 1,000 more per hour than expected.
The top-performing site is the Royal Palm P&DC in Opa-Locka, FL, where use of the equipment was recently expanded to additional shifts.
“Our employees worked hard to demonstrate what we can do,” said Plant Manager Linda Gray.
The equipment — called the Small Parcel Sorting System (SPSS) — represents a major investment for USPS, which is striving to grow its package delivery service.
Plans call for additional SPSS machines to be installed at 26 sites across the nation. The Royal Palm P&DC’s performance will be used as a baseline to measure national performance.
“This pilot site established strong performance indicators that will greatly benefit us,” said Headquarter Operation Specialist Lane Stalsberg.
SPSS machines also are being tested at the West Valley, AZ, L&DC; Los Angeles International Service Center; North Houston P&DC; and Queens, NY, P&DC, where the machine was the subject of a recent CNBC report.
Keep dreaming, if anything USPS will just eventually face total liquidation and the SPSS, assuming that it’s actually profitable and up-to-date; will be grabbed by one or more of our delivery competitors. UPS, Fed Ex, DHL, etc.
How soon people forget the rosy reports with the FSS. We bragged about how many job we can cut with these Flat Shredders. Look at what happens now.
How hilarious…..the USPS touting their “new” SPSS….now remember that the USPS gave away 78% of their parcel business to UPS and the remainder to FedEx so NOW they want the lion’s share of the parcel business after giving it all away…how stupid. And even if something like that were endangering the competition, Congress would tell the USPS to get rid of it. So why even try?
Yes Bonzo, we see your garbage once again.
Now go back to watching Fox news, loser.
Let’s be honest. Any time something that management does succeeds, it exceeds expectations. It is true to form that the better than expected production is to be used as the baseline. It’s just like when management claims that a carrier’s lightest day becomes his/her baseline performance. It’s great the have exceptional days; but they are just that-exceptions, not the rule.
Great to see some happy news for the USPS for a change ! We are not all slackers as the media portrays us oft times .
I am so happy to see this….when Donald Trump is President I hope he sells off the Post Office just as Jimmy Carter got rid of regulating the airline and telecommunications. UPS stock is over $100 dollars and FDX over $175 dollars…..count me in.
the only people who are against this are the status quo mental migets, uneducated, low IQ postal mismanagers who benefit from a corrupt, bankrupt govt agency. not run for the customers, but for themselves and their friends and family. nepotism is just one reason the po should be “sold off” by our bankrupt. US Govt which is 20 Trillion in debt……it will happen sooner or later-lets make it sooner. JUST PAINT ALL PO VEHICLES BROWN!!!!!!!!!!
Be careful what you wish for!
Privatization and and deregulation only lead to higher prices and degraded service! Only the top1% benefits. The USPS subsidizes
UPS and FEDEX and delivers the last mile for them for free!
What degree is needed to drive and sort mail for UPS or FedEx!
