5/17/2018 The Postal Service is showing its appreciation for employees who are military veterans by presenting them with military-style challenge coins.
Historically, the challenge coin is a symbol of military unit identity and camaraderie. They are awarded to service members for special achievement or mission participation.
“Military veterans make up a significant part of our workforce and their contributions are invaluable to postal operations,” said Chief Human Resources Officer Jeffrey Williamson. “We are proud to be able to show our appreciation for their service both in uniform and to the Postal Service.”
USPS is offering veterans the coins to mark Military Appreciation Month, which the nation observes each May.
Employees who are veterans and have five or more years of service with USPS will receive a coin and letter of thanks from Postmaster General Megan J. Brennan. Veterans with fewer than five years of employment will receive a certificate of appreciation.
USPS is one of the largest civilian employers of veterans. The organization will present the coins, letters and certificates to eligible employees at local recognition events throughout May.
The coin is double-sided and in the shape of a military dog tag. One side of the coin displays the Postal Service logo and a message thanking the employee for his or her service. The other side features an American flag design stamped with the words “Proud Veteran.”

To mark Military Appreciation Month, eligible veterans will receive challenge coins from USPS
In South Jersey P&DC our vet committee chairman got us in 2013 a challenge coin sealed in a protective case and a dog tag to hang from our rearview mirror. We also have a memorial wall and full size service flags hanging in our plant that he also championed. Every veteran that was here at the time recieved the same thing. For our postmaster general to trivialize the accomplishments of those of us with less than 5 years of service is insulting. In my opinion you can keep your letter.
I can see it now, Thanks you for your service, here is this coin. Now you got 4 hours of OT and a 6th day!
Didn’t get them here…must be “in the mail”.
Hello and good-day, funny how when these things if and do get handed out-5minutes later it’s forgotten about because the (sop) under the sup breathe they are saying -glad that’s over(now we gave them something) get back to work for our PayForNoPerformance award! This is sad-it goes on all over the country, not just certain places! People are constantly lied too, and manipulated to believe whatever MisManagement throws out there. We (the PO) will never be a fortune 500 company-these companies realize that to make a bottom line or to get numbers inline with any kind of realistic expectations-you need to cut the fat-God-the PO is the worlds worst! These companies are smart-they see the value of buying out employee’s to make a positive way for the future but not the Post Office-they are like water-take the path of least resistance. The VA got caught messing with the numbers and the national director was removed or resigned. The PO is no different they corrupt the numbers everyday to make like they are doing things above board and that all is well-you should listen to their stupid teleconference calls daily that spell doom to this disfunctional organization-YOU CANN’T MICROMISMANAGE FROM AFAR AND GET POSITIVE RESULTS. Typical day in some PO’s: “You have 30 routes and 10 carriers-Can you do it? Typical , Mismanagement response: Yes, we can do it- we have 24 hours in the day, yes, we can do it! CYA- cover your ass is the main mantra in our mismanagement 101 class -do that and we will lie and collude to cover everything else up. We don’t care if it cost millions cause we don’t follow the contract-hell, we don’t have to pay it. HaHa -typical mindset of these people(I’m just doing my job type) ! So keep your little tokens to yourselves and put em where the sun don’t shine. It will serve a better purpose there. Good-day
I can’t consciously accept a token of appreciation when it’s not given to all veterans, I excuse the person or persons that made that decision because I know they never served in the armed forces. A veteran knows it’s a brotherhood and sisterhood That serves together. We are sent to war and rely on each other to survive. Not giving a coin to a veteran because he or she hasn’t been employed for five years?? It is made of gold and diamonds?? It could be priceless and I wouldn’t accept it.
Just another wasteful way to express “Look at me! Look at what I did for these people!”. I will place it next to last years appreciation letter, in the trash. It means nothing when the carriers and clerks are treated like dogs. They are the backbone of the USPS, so where is their pay for performance? Twenty years in the military and I never went through so much crap. Truly a living hell. A coin shaped like a dog tag, just keep it. A waste and a joke.
Just another crap idea from the PU.
Real nice, How about all of the veterans who served 30 years and more and retired. Do you think we deserve one also. The Union should make the USPS send every retired veteran on in the MAIL.
lol…………the letter carriers can rub it as their “worry stone” as they are harassed to go faster and faster………what a garbage dump this place has become. like everybody is saying where is the buyout? give a veteran a buyout now.
First of all a challenge coin is round and a dam dog tag is what this is. that dog tag and a dollar will buy you a can of pop,, if the price hasn’t went up again!
The good old PU, still the same.
The South Jersey Veterans Committee based in the S J District distribution plant in Bellmawr Nj has been celebrating postal veterans 4 over 10 years. Five years ago the committee gave every postal veteran a challenge coin, a memorial day’s event featuring the military top drill team from D.C., military n political speakers, recognized all of our gold star families, local tv coverage n free lunch. Thnx 2 the District Management at that time (5 years ago). Management has turned us down since then rather than letting us continue. We the Veterans Committee r still asking why not????
enough with the insincere schmaltz…….just get me a BUYOUT so I can get out of this hell hole……..Viet Cong, I could deal with……..these people make me vomit………..let us go like Fortune 500 Companies do to there employees…….last year Verizon Phone Company gave every employee 55 years and older 100K BUYOUT. Verizon does not have a Company Union like the Clerks/Mailhandlers/Carriers do! President Trump raised the limit from 25K to 40K so whats the problem?
look very close……made in communist china lol! if you have 4 years and 11 months you are s@@T out of luck. IOD Megan will get a box of donuts for each year she has in…..its only right!
It’s really a great idea. I applaud the PMG for the recognition of our military veterans. The unfortunate thing for me is the postal service doesn’t recognize my time of service because I spent the bulk of my six years in the National Guard. As a NYS resident, Every other local and state outlet recognizes my time. I have veteran on my drivers license, have veteran on my licenses plates and other things. The outfit that I’ve been working for, for the past 5 years doesn’t. However, they salute all branches of service. To my fellow military brethren, I say to you ESPRIT DE CORP.. AIRBORNE ALL THE WAY!!!
I asked our secretary and higher ups. None of them knows anything about this?!!
Propaganda!!!!
Nice hat pin, I wear them all the time!
I worked there 32 years when I received my 25 year pin
As a retired postman and 62 years ago retired from great US ARMY I agree the medal should be offered
I’ll bet they will sit on some sup desk for months before handed out. Great idea though. Thx
Very nice gesture.
As veterans who are also Postal employees, we don’t need a 50 cent “military style challenge coin”…the PMG needs to show her appreciation by living up to the promise made when we were hired by keeping our FEHB benefits intact the way they are currently! The unions need to “grow a pair” also and fight for its members!!
I second that!
