USPS Opens First Village Post Office in Greater South Carolina District

The first Village Post Office (VPO) in the Greater South Carolina District opened in Chappells, SC, at Horne’s General Store. It will be open 12-14 hours a day, seven days a week.

VPOs can be located in convenience stores, local businesses, libraries, etc., and are managed by the proprietors. They provide timesaving convenience and, in most cases, longer hours than regular Post Offices. VPOs offer the products and services that customers use most often — including Forever stamps, Pre-paid Priority Mail Flat Rate envelopes and PO Box service. The first VPO opened in Malone, WA.

The Chappells Post Office was evaluated under the Post Plan and currently is open four hours a day.

Residents welcomed the new VPO at a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Ninety Six, SC, Postmaster Travis Whitted, Greater South Carolina District Retail Manager Margaret Floyd and local media.

“The Village Post Office is a perfect fit for the rural community,” said Floyd. “It provides access to postal products and services when the Post Office is closed.”
