Pittsburg NDC employees show solidarity
Employees at the Pittsburgh Network Distribution Center (NDC) have come together in support of a coworker recently diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
They hope to help Keith Hyatt, a maintenance mechanic and 27-year postal employee, find a bone marrow match made difficult because of his rare ethnic makeup. The NDC has hosted blood drives and fundraisers to help Hyatt. They also designated Sept. 26 “Team Hyatt Day” in support of their coworker and to let Hyatt know “No one fights alone.”
Hyatt’s leukemia is not in remission, but he is making progress toward a cure by staying in good physical shape.
“Keith is a great guy,” said Pittsburgh NDC Clerk Philip Swaney. “He’s active in his community, a coach, and he’s a great dad to his four boys.”
Medical statistics cite about 1 in 227 male adults will contract AML, a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. The American Cancer Society’s estimates there will be 14,590 new cases of AML diagnosed in the U.S. this year.
USPS is one of the largest federal organizations that contribute to marrow donations through the Delivering the Gift of Life program. Click here for more information on the program, or how to become a potential donor.
